Can WordPress do this?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

The first impression using WordPress was so exiciting and easy. Everything was smooth untul I realized one thing…

WordPress focus on my ownself i.e. the right purpose of blog. However what if I want to do something like more “open” website where people could visit, do registration and then post their own content?

The people should not required to have a WordPress account though…Just an ordinary visitor…

    Can WordPress do that?

    Thanks

Yes, if I’m not mistaken, WordPress can do that. Thing is, you should go self-hosted using downloadable WP engine at http://wordpress.org and not here at WP.COM.

You can add people manually to your blog, then they to would have access to your dashboard and can post too. But not quite sure what your wanting.

@wpadvanced, seems to me the OP outlined exactly what he wanted:

    1. Visit the blog
    2. Register for the blog
    3. Post content to the blog
    4. Not require visitors to have a WordPress account

As far as the first three items, you are right, no problem, though the OP would have to manually bridge the gap between visiting and registering by inviting those people to the blog as Contributors or Authors after they indicate that they want to be a part of the blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

However, this process falls down on the last point, because in order to do this on WordPress.COM, you have to have a COM account, you can’t be “just an ordinary visitor”. http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

Yes, but it’s the same thing for .org – you have to have an Account. Unless of course, you made some changes or got a plugin. Depending on what they want, theym ight be better off with something like bbPress.

    @wpadvanced,

So installing WP.ORG would be the same as WP.COM? In terms of users do not required to have WP account.

So I guess I should moving into something else like Drupal, perhaps?

@komunitassukseshariadi, A wordpress.ORG blog is not connected in anyway to wordpress.COM. If you have a self-hosted wordpress blog using the software from wordpress.ORG, you can set the blog up so that people will have to register on YOUR blog in order to view it or comment if you want to. Once you go self-hosted, your blog is completely standalone.

There are also a number of membership plugins that allow you to set certain parts of your blog so that registration would be needed to view those parts. Basically if you can dream it, it is highly likely someone has already created a plugin for wordpress to accomplish it.

Drupal, Habari, Joomla, and the rest of the full CMS packages are utterly and completely overkill for blogging and are not actually designed for blogging and the learning curve on those packages will have you spending all your time trying to figure out how to do something as opposed to blogging.

As they say, WordPress is what you use when you want to work with your blogging software and not fight it, to put it more simply.
