Can WordPress handle my task
-
Hello, I have a question about wordpress.com and wordpress.org, as well as a website I’m trying to create.
I will first explain what I’m trying to do to see which website I should seek. My goal with the website is to create a subscription-based platform that can only be accessed through the subscription. The best way I can explain the website’s functionality is through Indeed.com or any recruiting website. What I’m trying to do is have two subscription bases, one will be for clients, and the other will be for companies. Once the subscription is purchased, each respected subscription will see its specific data. For example, the client will see companies that are seeking help. At the same time, the company will see clients that are looking to find a job.
Now within the client side of the account, they can purchase certifications to help them meet the needs for specific jobs. There will also be a system that will show reviews for the companies and clients so that both sides know who to trust. And the website itself will be designed to be simplistic so that anybody can use the system, but the functionality needs to be smart enough to handle what we’re trying to achieve. For example, the client can also say I have certifications for XYZ so when they go to look for a job from a company, XYZ will automatically populate For them so they can find a company that meets their needs, and the same thing will grow for the company side XYZ will be shown to the company so they can find the best client to reach out to.
I know this is a lot to ask for. I’ve never used WordPress except to make a blog way back in the day. I currently use Wix, but the functionality is very simplistic for an e-commerce page. I know what I’m trying to achieve is going to need something more secure and be able to have a user base that is going to be constantly growing and can handle all that helpful information on top of restricting access to users, who have not paid a subscription, so it’s pretty much. Netflix meets Indeed.
That brings me to my final question, which WordPress to use? I currently have my domain with Go Daddy and paying for a Linux hosting server. Still, I didn’t know if paying them was worth it versus moving the domain to wordpress.com, as all the themes and plug-ins come in for free, if I’m not mistaken. In contrast, I’m finding out wordpress.org, and I have to pay for a lot of the plug-ins, and I think one of the plug-ins we researched is about $1000 for a lifetime membership (again, just one plug-in, and I think we need a couple). I could have the wordpress.com team make me a website, but I want to learn all this myself so that in the future, I can handle it all myself and understand it all and add to it. Thank you for any help.
I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

Good Morning –
Thanks for writing to us. I’ll do my best to outline the options in front of you for this project and talk about the benefits of using our managed hosting environment at WordPress.com.
First, let’s discuss the difference between running your own open source WordPress installation – versus using a managed hosting environment from WordPress.com.
You are correct, in that, when running a stand alone WordPress installation all of the heavy lifting for that project falls to you. This sort of management is going to detract from the time you have to focus on the content and business of your site. You won’t find better hosting specs or security than what we have at WordPress.com for the price. Most hosting providers offer limited support as well. These are all important considerations in your decision. On WordPress.com our team offers a managed hosting environment. This means that we handle all the back end details of the site, we do all the heavy lifting for you. Things like back ups, updates, security, spam, seo, ssl, mobile optimization, top notch hosting specs, and sorting out any errors or bugs that pop up along the way. When you run a stand alone WordPress installation you’re on the hook for it all. Every last detail.
Yes, you can build a subscription based site on WordPress.com. We have some more details about those different options on this page below. Please give that a look.
The information on this page will help you determine the best option to build a membership site with WordPress.com based on your desired features and budget. What Kind of Membership Site? Before diving into the creation of the site, take some time to think about the membership features you’ll need: Will members pay to join your site, or will it be free? What kind of membership acceThis page is great because it breaks down the different ways you can do this based on the hosting plan. You’re going to want the business or ecommerce plan for this project.
Selling a digital product, like a certification or a whole entire course is not an issue with those 2 plans either. These plans integrate with WooCommerce which allows you the ability to build a robust ecommerce solution. You aren’t going to be limited. And if you need advanced customization to help you match job listings to certifications then that’s easy enough to find through our partners like UpWork (free lance WooCommerce developers).
Write back with any other follow ups or to let me know if I’ve missed a part of your question(s). Be well! -
