Can WordPress make this site?

    Hi all,

    First ever time using and looking at WordPress. I really want to knuckle down and start learning how to use WordPress properly but before I do I was wondering if I could ask people views on whether or not WordPress could make the site I am hoping to build. No point in learning something that isn’t suitable right?

    The site I am hoping to build is essentially a news, media, articles site that people will access but whereby the users can filter the content into one of four categories. Like a big repository of useful stuff. The key bit being that older content would need to be easy to find and not just a huge backlog of dates of things that were posted (like a normal blog, and I know this is a blogging system but I understand it can be customised a lot, as WordPress is rather powerful). Also can wordpress allow voting to push more important content to the top or to the front page, things like that?

    Would I need to use plugins and special themes to achieve this? I am sorry this isn’t a very detailed brief but its just to get an idea of what you lovely experts think about this?

    I’m not going to do the chapter and verse answer here. Instead I will post the link to the comparison of WordPress.COM blogs to WordPress.ORG installs http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ If you read it closely you will recognize the limitations of WordPress.com blogging.

    The only themes we can use on free hosted WordPress.com blogs like your blog are the themes found here http://wordpress.com/themes/

    There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:

    upload any third party themes,
    create child themes,
    create our own themes,
    edit templates,
    create own own layouts,
    or use stylesheets from other themes.

    There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes that.

    WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install.

    Thanks so much for this. I see the difference in the two now and that the software i can install on my own web server is more likely to fit my needs.
