Can WordPress remove an old, unused blog?

i was interested in starting a blog so I looked to see if the one I wanted was already taken. Sadly it was. But there has been absolutely nothing done to it. It still has the original “Hello world!” post. Judging by the archive link on the right it’s from Feb. 2006. I was wondering if it was possible for the powers that be at WordPress to delete this blog so I can have the name I was hoping for. THANKS!

No I’m sorry that’s NOT possible. There is no requirement that we must use a blog we create. Only the member can delete the blog and once deleted blog URLs cannot be recycled http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/
Unless you contact the member in question and they agree to transfer the blog to you – you have reached a dead end.

Leave a comment on that hello world post and see if the blog owner is willing to transfer it to you. They might respond and then again they might not. Worth a shot though.

I think that WordPress.com is missing a money making opportunity here – charge a fee to send a moderated email to the email of record for a blog requesting the original register to transfer the blog to a new person – have it available to “old” blogs with no activity – charge a few bucks – the email would need to go through Staff to maintain privacy so the person requesting the blog does not send inappropriate content – it would clean up the site a bit –

Sorry did not mean to offend – just an opinion on a common complaint / request – guess I could paste it into the Ideas section – not a big $ but enough to cover a few minutes of Staff time and enough to discourage URL trolling.

What has not been mentioned here is that some of the ’empty’ blogs or ‘names not available’ are due to people using wp.com accounts for reasons other than blogging:
api keys, or to view private blogs… -

Yes, and test blogs: sometimes one needs to test things on a blog that is not private (feeds, for example). mine are filled with junk, but a more careful person may delete test posts after experimenting…
