Can WordPress survive the Slashdot effect?

I’m actually paying for WordPress services, but I don’t know if that makes a difference.
Can a WordPress blog survive the onslaught of being linked to from a popular site like CNN or Slashdot?
This is not a hypothetical question.

The biggest Slashdot onslaught wouldn’t even be a blip on our radar. WordPress.com is number 23 in the Quantcast top sites list. Slashdot is number 6060. A better question would be, could Slashdot survive WordPress.com.
CNN hosts their blogs with us.
Not a hypothetical answer.

The thing about the Slashdot effect, is that when a story makes it to the top page, roughly 30,000 obsessive-compulsives see the story within about 5 seconds, and most of them click on the link immediately.
That’s the real issue. I realize WordPress is a giant compared to a site like Slashdot.

I think that Mark is trying to tell you that WP routinely copes with effects bigger than the /. effect.

The volume of a slashdot effect is less extreme and less sudden than you think.
But yes, we handle bigger floods than that every day without even noticing.
