Can WordPress.com Blog be restored to previous state?

  • Unknown's avatar

I moved my blog within WordPress.com but much of my media library didn’t come back. Can the blog be restored from a previous state before that happened?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If the media was not stored on your web host’s servers but was hosted on other servers and you hotlinked to it then will not be in your media library export file.

Is the site you exported from still online?

If it is then what is the URL please?

Has 24 hours passed since you tried to import?

Sometimes the importer gets stuck. If the file is large you may have to import Posts, Pages, etc. in separate files. Or if the file is very large Staff may have to do the import.

I tagged this thread with modlook for Staff help for you. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

  • Hi there,

What exactly do you mean “moved within WordPress.com”? Did you import your content from one site to another? From what site did you import?

There is no way to restore your site to what it contained before you imported. Imports cannot be reversed. I can only completely empty the site so you can attempt to import the content again.

Thank you for your responses. I had exported the blog and then imported it to one with another name. Only the imported version is still online. The media from 2005-2012 didn’t make the transition but most of the earlier posts did. Some show the wrong blog name in the photo descriptions, which breaks the link and many of the photos appear to be unattached from the posts that they went to. Made myself a lot of work! I thought maybe someone at WordPress could just go back to say January 1, 2017 when all was working.

  • It’s not possible to revert your site to before the import, but if the old site is still online we might be able to pull the missing images across and rewrite the links on your site so they point to the new site.

Can you please give me the URL of the old site from where you imported, and also provide links to one or two posts on the new site that have the images still linking to the old site, and one or two posts containing images that weren’t transferred across. Then I can ask a developer to take a look and see if it’s possible to fix this for you.

My original blog is jimtown.wordpress.com. I exported it to tweedpatch.wordpress.com but then decided to put it back at jimtown. So currently the tweedpatch site is deleted and I have my posts at jimtown.

These are samples of links that work:
    https://jimtown.wordpress.com/2016/12/31/highlights/

    https://jimtown.wordpress.com/2016/07/31/sunny-day-2/

Here are samples that the photos do not work or show:

    https://jimtown.wordpress.com/2014/06/19/lure-of-the-lupines/

    https://jimtown.wordpress.com/2007/06/26/1926-wi-barn/

I have the blog private right now but will go change that quickly so you can look at it. Thank you!

  • Okay, just to clarify, your exported from jimtown to tweedpatch. Then emptied jimtown. Then exported from tweedpatch back to jimtown. And finally deleted tweedpatch?

It looks like you might have deleted tweedpatch before the images were all transferred back to jimtown – that only happens after an import completes. This means we should be able to rewrite the links of the images that reference tweedpatch, and any of those images that are in jimtown’s library will then display. But we won’t be able to fetch any images that are missing, as the site where they were stored no longer exists. So we won’t be able to fix all the posts, for example, the wi-barn post you linked above.

I notice you also deleted a number of posts on jimtown after doing the import, so I just want to make sure that I have the timeline correct before getting this started. It’s also best that you don’t make further changes to existing content until we’re done, so let me know if we should proceed trying to fix the links.

Yes, thanks. If you repair the links, I’ll hold off on making changes and later try to replace the missing photos that are important to me. I appreciate your help, it will save a lot of time. Most of the posts I deleted were duplicates. Thank you.

  • Okay. I’ve submitted a request for a developer to look what we can do. I’ll let you know once I hear back from them.

  • Okay. We’ve rewritten the incorrect image links on your posts, and it looks like our dev was still able to retrieve images from the deleted site and import them as well.

If you still notice any links pointing to the wrong source even though the image is in your library, let us know. Any images that are not in the library any more, you’ll need to fix manually, but otherwise you should be good to go.
