Can WP.com create a Giveaway widget for us, please???

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to suggest WP.com create a Giveaway widget for sidebar and/or posts. They are very important and necessary and there is no way for the many users to have this option, yet. Please consider!!! Desperately, Tammy Snyder of Arkansas Book Reviewer.com

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Oh, sorry. Thank you!

No problem but I do not advise holding your breath.

Just butting in to say that’s one of the better review policies I’ve seen. And also to note that sponsored giveaways or interviews a la Friday Reads are banned here. Not sure if you’re asking about that, but it bears noting.

    Raincoaster, please explain.
I wasn’t asking about having giveaways or interviews. They’re all over the internet. Never saw anything that you couldn’t do so on WP. ?? Please show me what you’re referring to.

And thank you for the compliment! :)

Giveaways and interviews are indeed all over the internet, but all that’s relevant to a WP.com blog is what’s permitted here. Being paid to post, whether the payment is money, goods, or services, is banned here. I did an article on the Friday Reads scandal that is a great example of behavior that will get a blog here suspended (note she isn’t hosted here).

Paperback payola: Why #fridayreads is turning into a hashtag of horror

So, you could not post interviews if posting the interviews is contingent on being paid in some way. You cannot insist on getting something for yourself if you want to do a giveaway. You cannot link to or post about a site or person or product if you are compensated for doing so. Any of that will get your site here suspended.

I only bring this up because I particularly covered this story and god knows, I’ve been reminding people of the rules here for 7.5 years and counting. I think one of the reasons we dont’ have a widget like that, or rafflecopter, is that WP.com wants to discourage blogs that think along those lines, as they’re difficult to police.

That’s my take on this too.

Well then, I have nothing to worry about as I do not get paid (in any way) to do anything here! As most reviewers, we receive books donated to us. I have never, ever, heard of anyone insisting on receiving anything themselves in order to do a book giveaway, etc. Maybe I hang out with the better crowd! My reviewing, interviewing, giveaways are available to whomever wishes to participate. It is there to help the author promote their works and as something I really love to do and think I’m actually pretty good at. And as an author I know how important they are, but I never manipulate, bribe or anything else. I get the word out about what I offer and they decide on their own if they want it.
I was wanting, though, to have a side business of copywriting. Not from my review site, but another website. Again, receiving pay would be based on a clients desire and not any pushing or insisting on my part. I do believe I can say, I’ve never heard of what you’re talking about ever happening. Then again, I don’t get out much. ;)

About the widget, I must be very ignorant because I simply see it, regarding books, as a way for authors to “giveaway” their books for promotion purposes. It is a common, and expected, practice for authors and that allows them to do so in an honest way where someone else (like Rafflecopter) is doing the random choosing. Oh, well. I’d rather be ignorant or innocent, whatever, than live thinking everyone’s on the take.

  • Hi Tammy – To confirm, you’re certainly welcome to host giveaways to give away copies of your books. Rafflecopter won’t work here at WordPress.com because it contains code that’s stripped out for security reasons. There’s a post about Giveaways here that includes some suggestions for how to manage them in the comment thread:

I’ve added your request for a giveaway widget to our suggestion list, to be considered for future updates. :)

Thank you, Eurello. Informative post. :)

As for copywriting, you can of course do that and use a Wp.com blog to publicize your business. What you cannot do is get paid to write blog posts and post them on WP.com.

I’ve seen ads for this on freelance writing sites. No interest in that at all. :) I only want to copywrite for Indie Authors writing their book jacket copy, web copy, etc. Like they do at trade publishers only for the unrepresented.
