Can you block users/accounts due to disturbing comments?

I have a nice, basic blog where I usually write about my children. Lately, I have been getting comments from an individual who is clearly a pedophile. The comments are fairly graphic and disturbing. The first time it happened I marked it as spam. Is there anything else I can do? I understand WordPress wants to protect speech but I cannot think of a place in this world where this person’s comments would not be illegal.

Under the admin section–>Settings–>Discussion Settings, you can set it so that all comments are moderated (meaning you have to go in and approve them before they will appear). There are some other options that might help you too. If you require they sign in or leave an email that might be enough to deter them.
You might even want to contact your local police. Save all evidence.

Thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, I already have those options implemented. This person is rather shameless. I was hoping there was some hack or trick that could filter this guy (?) out before it even reaches me.

Hi there,
There is no effective way to block subscribers, so it would be ineffective to provide the ability to manually unfollow or unsubscribe a user. A follower could create a new account, username, or e-mail address and refollow the blog. Since IP addresses are dynamic, blocking the address would not work either. Also, other users who are currently on the same IP address might inadvertently be blocked as well.
However, I have a few recommendations: Like @Michael mentioned, make sure comment moderation is turned on Settings > Discussion so that all comments have to be approved. That way nothing will get through to the public side of your site without your approval.
Alternatively, you can set your site to private and then invite only those that you desire to view your site.

Have you thought about reporting this to your local law enforcement?
They might not be able to do anything, but it might be worth a try. If this person really is as obvious in their comments as you’ve suggested is the best way to deal with it to just ignore them?

If you really feel that there is a threat to your safety, especially if this user is contacting you outside of your blog, reporting this to your local law enforcement may be a good thing to do.
