can you build your site before having a hosting company

  • Unknown's avatar

can you build your site prior to having a host company? I don’t want to transfer my domain until i know i Like my wordpress site etc.

Sure would be nice if WordPress had a live chat or even email address to contact someone. so frustrating and such a waste of time

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes you can build a site here. Yest you can create and export file of the content in the site (not the theme) and import it into a WordPress.org install later if you wish to. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and different I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

    Yest = Yes

I don’t want to transfer my domain until i know i Like my wordpress site etc.

Are you referring to mapping a WordPress.com blog to a domain URL that you already own? If so, that can be done.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Thank you I was wondering if they were different.

There is no phone support. Live chat support is available only to those who have purchased the $299. per year Business bundle upgrade. The email address is support@wordpress.com

This is a peer support forum where Staff and Volunteers work together cooperatively to provide WordPress.com support. Emailing support means it takes longer to get an answer than posting to the support forums does.

Volunteers answer the majority of all support questions and when we cannot provide support we tag threads for Staff assistance.

We are happy to answer your WordPress.COM questions right here in this thread. Please simply post exactly what you need help with into this thread, knowing there’s rarely ever a question posted here that has not already been asked and answered.

Here are the differences for you to consider:
    wordpress.com vs wordpress.org

Here are the details of all three plans WordPress.com offers only to those who have blogs hosted by WordPress.com.
    http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/
premium ie. pro-bundle plan details http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/pro-bundle/
    business plan bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/wordpress-business/

Note that none of the plans allow you to run advertising or to upload your own themes or plugins. The only WordPress.com blogs that can be equipped for ecommerce transactions with shopping carts are those with the Business upgrade. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/ecommerce-is-now-available-on-wordpresscom?replies=1

We can sell only products we personally create and/or services we personally provide on WordPress.com hosted blogs. We can post a PayPal button http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/

If we have a shopping cart set up for our own products or services elsewhere online we can create a custom menu and include a custom link to it in the menu.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-custom-links

WordPress.com allows bloggers to insert text affiliate links within post and page content to most third-party affiliate programs, provided they are not the primary content of the site in question.

Image affiliate links in posts and pages and any banners, affiliate links in sidebar or footer widget areas, are still considered to be advertising and are not allowed on WordPress.com blogs. http://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/

This seems way more confusing than I thought.

Can I delete the blogs I currently have and start fresh? I can’t find a delete option.

  • Unknown's avatar

Content can be quickly and easily removed from any blog. See here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-to-delete-content-of-my-blog-but-also-keep-site-name?replies=5#post-1550840

Deleted blog URLs are not recycled, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

The URLs can be changed to other .wordpress.com URLs or you can purchase your own domain.

If you want to change the blog address ie. the URL starting with http:// then you must be logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog to do that and the URL you desire must be available. If so then you can change the URL by using this guide http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/

When purchasing a domain mapping upgrade it does not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com URL is.

To delete a free hosted WordPress.COM blog you must be logged in under the exact same username account that registered a blog to delete the blog. To prevent accidental or inadvertent deletion of blogs, there are multiple warnings given that blog deletion is permanent and irreversible. Lastly, a verification link is sent in an email and must be clicked to delete a blog. If clicking that link does not work then copy and paste it into your upper browser window and click. Once that link is clicked the URL is forever gone.

    Delete a Website

Don’t delete them. Set them to Private under Settings->Reading. Deleting blogs means neither you nor anyone else can ever use that URL again.

Sounds like you’re getting in over your head. Start with http://learn.wordpress.com. It’s way easier just to blog than to fart around with setup. Trust me.

I built my site 8 or 9 years ago and had no issues whatsoever… the hosting came with it so I didn’t have to do anything separate.

If i didn’t want to keep my same domain it wouldn’t be so much of an issue. If I could just build the site in one spot with out having to transfer etc… it would be much easier.

My fear is not having a site for any downtime.

    Than you for your help

  • Unknown's avatar

Keeping your domain URL and using it here isn’t a big deal. You renew it every year with the registrar you bought it from. You also purchase a domain mapping upgrade which you renew here at WordPress.com every year. I have been here for 8 years and the downtime has been only 110 minutes during a prolonged DDos attack in 2010.
