No, we are limited to the themes listed under appearance > themes. Themes that are used here have to go through a design and security review and have to be modified to work with the multi-user software used here. They also have to be tested on all browsers on all platforms and then if problems are found the whole thing starts over again.

There is the paid CSS upgrade which, if you have CSS editing experience, allows you to stylize the themes here, but you cannot change the underlying functionality. The sandbox theme is wide open in that regard and people here have done some amazing things with it. If you do not have CSS editing experience, there are tutorials available online, and then you can use the CSS preview function that wordpress provides to try out changes before you pay for the upgrade.

Go to the FAQ or to the support page and search for CSS for more information.

I have no css experience….but if I pay for the upgrade I can use templates from the net?…what if I paid the 15 dollars for my own domain name…musiklounge.com….then can I add downloaded themes?

No, the upgrade only allows you to modify the CSS for the themes listed under appearance > themes.

You cannot use themes downloaded off the net here at wordpress.COM under any circumstances.

    what about wordpress.org?

With a self-hosted blog using the wordpress software downloaded from wordpress.ORG, you are for the most part wide open. You can use themes from the net, you can install plugins, you can use javascript, flash, iframes, forms, advertising, pretty much anything you want. Be warned though javascript, flash and such is great but there is a lot of very badly written code out there and some of it written that way on purpose. Caveat emptor (let the buyer (or downloader) beware.

You also have to do all the upgrades, troubleshooting, maintenance, backups, and uploads yourself. Oh yeah, and there is the cost. Figuring hosting and the average cost of a domain name registration you are looking at an average of around $10 to as much as $100 per month depending on bandwidth usage and storage space requirements.
