Can you confirm this email address is genuine please?

    Hello,
    I believe that my website has been hacked. For this reason, I’m checking everything to make sure that it won’t happen again, after the clean up.

    Since the 1st of April last year, I receive emails from (email visible only to moderators and staff) (tricksandtrips.com is my domain) informing about any update (new user, password change, etc..).

    Can you please confirm this email address is genuine? A few days ago, I received an email saying that a new user was created but I didn’t create it, and I’m the only administrator.

    Thank you for your help, and stay safe.

    We can’t help you as your site isn’t running on the wordpress.com platform but is hosted by Bluehost – https://www.whoishostingthis.com/#search=tricksandtrips.com – meaning your site uses the open source wordpress.org. So those emailas are certainly not coming from wordpress.com.

    Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate.

  • Hi there,

    So you own tricksandtrips.com ? If so. that is the default email address the WordPress software uses to send you notifications related to your site. Those emails have nothing to do with us, WordPress.com, but that doesn’t mean anything as your site is not hosted with us.

    If you use the open source WordPress software on a site at the domain, tricksandtrips.com , then that email address is legit.

    For more questions about the WordPress software’s built-in email function and how you can customize that email address, you can ask the WordPress.org community at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/. They provide support for the version of WordPress you’re using on that site.

    A few days ago, I received an email saying that a new user was created but I didn’t create it, and I’m the only administrator.

    I’m guessing you have the setting allowing visitors to your site to create guest accounts switched on. You can disable that at Settings ->General in WP-Admin.

    @kokkieh

    Wow, I had no idea there was such an option, thanks for pointing it out, and for the explanation as well.

    I raised a ticket with Sucuri just in case, but I think you’re right.

    Thanks again for your time, and stay safe!
