Can you correct my error with page jumps please?
-
Problem with edited page jumps. On my website http://www.mazzolindicanto.com one of my pages was entitled “Northern Songs A-F”. I decided that page was getting too big, so I added a new page and divided the text on the existing page. Now I have “Northern Songs A-C” and “Northern Songs D-F”. Then I went to my table of contents page to edit the coding for the page jumps. Where the coding had said (something like – – I forget the exact coding) “northern-songs-a-f”, I simply went down the list and changed the coding there to “northern-songs-a-c” and “northern-songs-d-f” as appropriate. But now when I click on a song title in the table of contents, instead of page jumping to the correct song in the Lyrics page (this had aways worked perfectly before) I am getting an “Error 404 – page does not exist” message. I must have left out a step or two. (In other words, all I did was change “f” to “c” and “a” to “d” from the old coding.) Can you please help me?

Hi there!
Can you please go through your pages and make sure that you’ve updated both the table of contents links and the identifiers within your page as outlined here:

Hi Shawna, and thanks.
I read the instructions on the link you gave me, but (at least so it seems to this neophyte) those instructions and the suggested coding are different from what already exists and has been working fine on my blog/website. Getting back to your message, I thought that I HAD updated the table of contents links. I did not change any identifiers, etc. on the anchor page because I did not see anything to change. (And, again, the instructions on the link you gave did not help because they looked so different.)
Further, as I wrote yesterday, I added a new page and divided the old one (which had been A-F) into A-C and D-F. Well, it seems that the page jumps for “new” page, D-F, are working perfectly. (And all I did was change the coding from “northern-songs-a-f” to “northern-songs-d-f” on the table of contents page. I did nothing to the anchor page, yet everything is fine.)
But the page jumps for the A-C page (which actually is the old A-F page) don’t work. I notice that some coding got messed up on the A-C anchor page. For example many of the “” and ” instructions just suddenly have disappeared. Also, after the
coding “<h3 id=xxxxx”>” there is some garbled text reading “>”. I tried to correct those things on a few lines, but still the page jump did not work. So what is wrong with my A-C page that is not wrong with all the other pages? -
Hi there!
Thanks for taking a look at that. One thing that’s definitely breaking your page jumps is that you haven’t updated the page slug for the page titled “Northern Songs A-C”. If you visit that page, you’ll see this URL:
http://mazzolindicanti.com/lyrics-2/northern-songs-a-f-3/
Here’s how you can update the page slug (I know it says its about posts, but it works the same way for pages):
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/new-post-screen/#post-title-and-permalink-url
At a glance, it appears that a few of your songs don’t have identifiers. I’m not sure why this would have happened as the editor wouldn’t have stripped this content, even if it was formatted incorrectly. Specifically I saw your first two songs don’t have ids set.
As for the ones with identifiers. It looks like the > (greater than) sign got encoded for some reason. When this sign is encoded you’ll see & gt; (without the space). In all of these places, just removed all four of those characters.
Once you’ve added the identifiers back to the ones where it’s missing and you’ve deleted this encoding error your page jumps should be working again.

Bingo! That was it, Indeed, the URL had not been updated. I went to the link you gave me and followed the instructions, and that seems to be it. (The funny thing, to me at least, is that I did no such URL editing for the new page, yet the page jumps work fine. I guess that was done automatically when a new page was created.)
Anyway, thank you very much.

Of course! I’m glad everything is working now. Let me know if I can help with anything else.
