Can you delete dates from WordPress Posts?
-
Is there any way to keep the dates from showing on WordPress posts? I’ve searched the support site and couldn’t find any information. I want to delete the date and time from all of my posts. Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you have some CSS experience and get the CSS upgrade, the date itself can be hidden, but the “on” before it cannot, so what you would be left with would be.

It’s important to know that if you remove the date and time stamp from posts that have already been indexed by search engines and already appear in their search results that the result will be broken URLs. What that means is any person using search engines to locate specific subject matter who locates an indexed URL in search results and clicks it will experience a “404” page not found. In other words this is not a sensible thing to do if your already have an archive of indexed content.

Hiding the date stamp via CSS editing hides it from viewers only; it doesn’t change the actual permalink and it doesn’t hide it from search engines.
-
Not all themes include the ‘posted by… on….’ junk around the date, so if you’re buying custom CSS to hide all dates and times then it’s worth testing out some alternative themes beforehand, paying particular attention to what happens on single post pages. Ideally you want one where the date is always displayed at the top of the post and doesn’t sit alongside anything else.
Bear in mind that custom CSS would also allow you to change any colours, fonts, or other formatting issues, so try to look beyond those things to the underlying structure.

Hi, I want to hide the date and time at the top of my front page from viewers. Is there a help site that provides a step by step (very basic) way to do this? Even to locate the php page and edit the code if needed. Isn’t this a simple edit? I don’t know CSS –is that really needed to make this change?
Thanks in advance for your assistance. -
@Keith,
CSS help here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-css/#css-help
Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

Yes it is required to make this change.

Thanks for this. I appreciate your time to reply. I took a look at the CSS help site you listed. So, if I understand this correctly, for 14.97 a year, I can get a CSS upgrade. And that upgrade will allow me to delete/hide the date/time stamp on my site? And that’s my only option if I wish to hide the date? Thank you.

@keithhenty, CSS is theme specific which means each theme will very likely require a different solution, and has been suggested above, one some themes it is not possible due to the way the markup (xhtml) and the CSS are structured.
If you are talking about the Pilcrow theme on the blog linked to your username, then it is easily done with this.
.entry-meta { display:none; } -
Thank you. Theme specific, hmmm, good point. Please assume I know nothing of coding or html. Where and how do I enter your suggestion of …. “.entry-meta”, etc.? Thanks for your time and I think this may be helpful to others.

All you have to do is go to appearance > edit CSS, delete all the informational text from the text area, paste in what I have above and then you can use the “preview” to see what it looks like. You sometimes have to force refresh the preview page. It has been sort of flakey lately.
-
Yes, I was able to follow your instructions….and voila! The date is gone!
But it says I must purchase the upgrade to save the changes…
Hmmm. $14.97 a year to drop the date. (And, I suppose, to gain other design options). Thanks again for your attention and suggestions.
Sincerely,
Keith -
You are welcome, and yes it would require the purchase of the CSS upgrade. Still, $15 per year isn’t a huge investment, but to just remove the date, it would be expensive.
What you could do is to include the content on your main page right now as a page instead of a post. Pages do not show dates. You can then set that page as your static front page. If you are going to be blogging also, you will need to create a “blog” or “posts” pages as well.
-
Yes, thank you—you are right, and this reminded me that…. I actually want static pages! I don’t need this site as a place to post or blog. It’s now primarily a calling card for me and should be undated. I’d like to convert it all to web-site pages (that I can update) instead of a blog.
I will follow the support link you provided and see if this makes sense to continue inside WordPress.com.
Meanwhile thanks again and I welcome more suggestions or comments. Perhaps I’ll be able to return the favor someday. By the way, I like your blog (and timethief’s) and this forum enabled me to find out a bit more about your substantial skills and interests. -
This might be a useful reference for you then.
