Can You Edit WordPress Templates
-
Can you edit a template in WordPress.com or are you stuck with whatever design the template has? I ask since we cannot FTP into the code.

Hello,
Support documentation link http://en.support.wordpress.com
search string > editing templates and themes
Search result > http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/I’m sorry but as you can see the answer is “no”. There is no FTP access, we cannot upload plugins or themes and we cannot edit themes or templates on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. Please read > WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
The themes we can use are found in our dashboards here > Appearance > Themes
there are over 120 of theme and you can use the Themes Showcase live demo site and features filters in the searchbox there to check them out. http://theme.wordpress.com/You can click “preview” to see how they would appear on your blogs and “activate” when you do select one.

If you are adept at CSS editing and willing to pay for an annually renewable Custom design upgrade then you can change the appearance of any free theme but not the functionality. It does not allow you to remove footer links to the theme designer or to wordpress.com. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at WordPress.COM.
If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
If you do purchase the upgrade be sure to read this article before starting your editing > http://csswiz.wordpress.com/2009/10/15/if-you-have-the-wp-com-css-upgrade/
