Can you fix my Comments Closed problem? I've reset the default to allow comment

Can you fix my Comments Closed problem?? I’ve reset the default to allow comments on new posts, but it’s not working–I have to go in after each post and manually check “allow comments”. Help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Make sure under Settings ->Discussion in your dashboard that the default option to allow comments is in fact selected and save the settings. It could be you selected it but then forgot to save.

You can also set this for each post before it publishes – you don’t have to go back after publication. In the post editor, look for the module titles “Discussion”. If you can’t see it, click on Screen Options at the top of the page and make sure it’s selected. Then you can enable or disable comments before posting.

I’ve repeatedly saved the checked box for “allow comments”. I’ve gone to the screen help–top right–and checked Discussions. New posts still come up with Comments Closed–so that I have to go back and manually fix each post after it publishes. This is not working for me.

And it seems that, as the Default setting is for Allow Comments–if you change that to Closed–but want to change it back to Allow Comments–it just doesn’t accept that–which makes NO sense. Settings should be easy to change. Maybe I’m just not understanding your directions.

  • Sounds like you’re doing exactly what you should be doing, but there might be a glitch of some kind in the system. I’ll tag this for staff to follow up. Please make sure you’re subscribed to the thread and be patient while waiting for their response.

Thank you, “K”–I appreciate your attention to my issue in tagging this for WP staff. Have a blessed day.

    Hi there,

I just took a look at your most recent post here:

    http://tinderboxtenant.wordpress.com/2014/07/01/revolving-stage/

Right now the setting for “Allow comments” is unchecked on that post, which is why the comments are closed.

You can change that comment setting for a group of posts all at once by following these steps:

    1. Go to the Posts > All Posts screen in your blog dashboard.
    2. Select the posts you would like to modify or check the box next to “Title” column at the top to select all posts on that page.
    3. Select Edit from the Bulk Actions drop down menu.
    4. Click the Apply button.
    5. Change the options for Comments and Pings to Allow.
    6. Click the Update button.

If that doesn’t work for you, please let me know!

Thank you, Rachel–I followed your helpful instructions.

It would be helpful, in addition, if you could answer this question:

Does changing the default setting on Comments from “Allow” to “Closed”, mean that forever afterward, we have to manually fix according to the 6 steps you gave me?

In other words, is that default hard-set in the system so we cannot simply recheck the “Allow Comments” in Settings??

If so, it seems there’s less risk of problems to NOT change that Setting, leave it on the Default–and then decide later to change it in the Post Editing page… or am I just being difficult?

Thanks in advance for help with clarification.

    Hi there,

If you change the default setting to not allow comments, you can either check “Allow Comments” when you create/edit the page or use the steps I outlined to enable comments on one or more posts at a time.

If you have any further trouble with that setting, please let me know.

Sorry to keep bothering you, Rachel– What I’m trying to get clear in my mind, for future reference if I open another blog: Can the Default Setting for “Allow Comments” in the “Settings-Discussion” NOT BE RESET, once you’ve changed it from “Allow” to “Closed”?

Your previous reply seems to indicate that once the Default Setting has been changed, it is essentially “Locked”–(and any future changes must be made on the create/edit page or using the steps you outlined)–Is this correct?

Thanks in advance for your trouble.

Oops, I misunderstood the question you were asking. Sorry about that!

Whenever you change the comment settings under Settings > Discussion, it applies to any new posts you publish. So you can change it back and forth, but it will only apply to new posts — not to posts you’ve already published.

To change the comment settings on posts you’ve already published, you’ll need to enable or disable comments on each post individually or use the bulk editing method I outlined earlier.

I hope that clears things up, but please let me know if you still have questions about that. :)

Thanks very much– When I first requested help, it seemed I couldn’t change the Settings > Discussion feature for scheduled posts. BUT it seems everything is okay, working now.

I appreciate your time and attention–thanks again.
