  I’m trying to blog and it keeps telling me that the save draft failed and if I try to publish it says publish failed. When I first logged in it said that my ‘jetpack needed to be updated’. What does that mean?

  I’m assuming that you are using the Jetpack plugin to blog on your self- hosted site : http://www.ellenchauvet.com

  Jetpack is a plugin that allows you to administer your set-hosted sites from WordPress.com, amongst other things.

  You can find more information on Jetpack here:
  https://wordpress.org/plugins/jetpack/

  From what you have described, It would seem that you need to update your Jetpack plugin on your self-hosted WordPress site in order to restore its functionality.
