Can you help me customize/format the e-mail informing subscribers of new posts?

Hi support, I’m extremely new to blogging and after spending a few hours searching for answers, I’ve come up empty and thought you might be able to help. I’m trying to change the format the e-mail that is sent to my list of subscribes after I create a new post but can’t find anywhere in the dashboard how to change the format of the e-mail. No matter what settings I change in the dashboard, wp sends an e-mail out that is extremely bland and generic. I would love to forward one of these e-mails to you so that you can see what I’m talking about. All the e-mail contains is “Post Changed” ……. made the following changes to the “…..” post [date]…. etc. Whereas, I’ve subscribed to NintendoGlobe which uses wp and their e-mails are fantastic; with colors, etc. Any help would be appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you.

It isn’t possible for WordPress.com users to modify the email notifications sent to subscribers. However, your notifications should look similar to those of any other blogs that you’re following on WordPress.com. Would you be able to take a screenshot of how your emails look and then upload the image to your Media Library?

    Take a Screenshot

    Hi Everlase,

I’ve uploaded the two screenshots to my media library for you to have a look at. They are named “indolcg” and “NintendoGlobe”

    Thanks,

    Thank you for providing screenshots.

Based on your original description, you have subscribed to your own blog to receive email post changes which show the differences between the latest two versions of the post to a list of users that you can control from the Settings → Email Post Changes page. That is not the normal subscription email that blog followers will receive if they sign up to receive updates when you publish a new post on your site.

To subscribe to receive formatted emails like the ones you mentioned for NintendoGlobe, you should open your blog and click the Follow button in the gray admin bar while you are logged in. Then you can manage the settings in the WordPress.com reader at http://wordpress.com/#!/read/edit/ to control if or how often you get an email or if you’d just like to view WordPress.com blogs you’ve subscribed to at http://wordpress.com/#!/read/

Thanks for the instructions. I was able to get it to work for me.

The reason I have this blog is to replace what I currently do in sending out a newsletter which I e-mail to a list of recipients. I thought I’d be able to just add the list of all of my recipients’ e-mail addresses in the Additional E-mail Addresses field in the Settings/Email Post Changes on the dashboard, publish my newsletter on my new blog and voila! a seemless transition without them knowing any different.

However, I seem to get the impression that it won’t work that way. It seems there’s more to it and I’m guessing, I will have to send them all an e-mail instructing them to go to a website where they will have to follow my blog in order to get the posts e-mailed to them. Is this correct?

Since this seems to be the case, can you give me the instructions that I need to e-mail to my recipients so they can do this (i.e., normal subscription instructions)?

    Thanks for all your help.

Also, what size does the image need to be for a clear avatar?

  • Yes, subscribing is a user feature, so they’ll need to follow the blog themselves.

The avatar can be any size as long as it’s under the maximum listed file size. I usually use 500×500.

Thanks for the response. So, what do I do to get people to subscribe to my blog? Can you please provide me with step by step instructions or send me a link where instructions may already be in some documentation you have? Should I use the “Invite a New User to Your Blog” function in the Users section in the Dashboard or some other method?

The reason I ask this is because when someone goes to my blog (indolcg.wordpress.com) there’s follow button or subscribe button and I’m not sure if I have to turn something on in the dashboard or where to go from here?

I look forward to hearing from you.

  • The Follow button will work, another thing that you could do with be to add a Subscribe widget to your sidebar via Appearance -> Widgets in your Dashboard.

Then, just ask them to visit your blog to subscribe.

Thank you so much for all of your help. I think I just have one more question. In the future, after I have a lot of posts on the blog, if someone new subscribes or follows, how many e-mails will they receive? Will they be bombarded with tons of e-mail with each e-mail containing notification of previous posts or will they only get notification e-mails from that point onwards of new posts?

  • They will only receive posts published after the time they subscribe.
