Can you help me notify subscribers/followers of updates via email?

    I just want subscribers of my blog to be notified by email when I make changes to the blog such as new pages or photos. I am using the Twenty Twelve theme for a private subscriber only site.

    I have attempted to add the ‘follow blog’ widget as suggested on the support pages but firstly, it won’t appear on my existing pages and secondly even when it does appear on a new page and my subscribers follow, it’s still not sending updates on new activity. The users have checked their notification settings and do not have anything blocked or going to spam.

    What else can I do to fix this problem or get around it?

    Hi Phil,

    I can think of two things to check.

    First did you change the blog from public to private, after people had subscribed. See this for more info:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/#changing-a-blog-with-followers-from-public-to-private

    Second the users you have invited have confirmed they subscribed for updates via email. Sometimes people accept the invite but forget to click on the subscription via email option.

    Is the “Follow Blog” widget not showing up just a browser cache issue?

    Not everyone gets email from a private blog – I just checked one of my blogs – set it to private

    the email only subscriber did not get an email – I got an email but I am admin & member of the site

    so looks like your email only subscribers might be out of luck

    lets also let the staff take a shot at the fine points of Private blogs

    Please note that subscribers are only notified for new posts, not changes made to pages.

    The bulk of your pages are currently set to full-width meaning no sidebar will show up. You can change this by navigating to the Edit Page screen and changing the page attributes as shown here:

    You’ll want to select “Default template” to have your sidebar appear.

    Secondly even when it does appear on a new page and my subscribers follow, it’s still not sending updates on new activity.

    @captnmike is correct in that only people that are both subscribers and “viewers” of your private blog will receive notifications. However, I suspect this issue is more to do with the pages vs. posts problem discussed above. Can you try publishing a new “post” to your site rather than a new page?
