Can you help with my category description?

  • Unknown's avatar

On my site, slightlyremoved.wordpress.com, I have 1 category that will not allow me to add a description. Every other one, I have no problems, my my “Lost Cities” category always responds with “item not updated” whenever I try. I’d love your advice, please.

    Regards,

That’s very odd and I don’t know how to help so I’m flagging this thread for Staff attention.

  • What exactly are you trying to add as the description?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to add the formatted quote:

“. . . where there was not a soul to be found
and where there were no roads,
    perhaps there
    could I discover traces
    of some ancient civilization.”
    – Sven Hedin

But nothing that I try with work, even regular text.

  • That is more than likely the problem. Are you able to add it as a string of words with no line breaks or quote marks?

  • Unknown's avatar

That is most definitely not the problem. Usually a category refuses to be updated if there’s a duplicate of that category: check your categories as well as your tags and make sure you don’t have the same category name twice.

Macmanx, I have similar edits on several other descriptions, so I’m sure it’s not that. And even regular text won’t update and be accepted.

There’s no other category duplicates of that name either.

    Well, there is:

Categories and tags are actually the same kind of data: you should never use the same word or phrase as both a category and a tag.

justpi, thank you. That did it. Also a good thing to know.

Any idea why it let me update my travel category when I use the travel tag all the time too then?

    You’re welcome.
You’ve got a lot of deleting to do, because you’ve got many duplicate cats/tags, and there’s absolutely no point doing that:
    a) As far as organizing/navigating your blog is concerned, categories (obligatory) should be the main subgroups of your posts while tags (optional) should be more specific keywords related to the content of a particular post (for example, category United States, tag pickup trucks).
    b) For the global WP tag pages, categories and tags are exactly the same thing: tags.
    c) For search engines categories have some significance but tags are almost ignored. Search engines nowadays pay more attention to your content rather than your tags. Check this:

    d) If you use the same word as both a cat and a tag you’ll run into technical problems of the type you experienced.

“Any idea why it let me update my travel category when I use the travel tag all the time too then?”
Can’t say: for a good answer I’d have to experiment in my tests blog, but I don’t think it’s worth the trouble (since the existence of duplicates is wrong anyway).
