Can you please advise why my thumbnail images are so out of proportion?

I am adding products to my website. I upload images to put with my products. I select the image I want for my ‘set featured image’ and it looks good in the thumbnail preview so I publish it. When I go onto my website the image is too big and oversized. I have tried so manyt ways to reduce the size of the images but it makes it worse. What can I do?

Could you please send me a link then to see what it looks like on your website?
It might be that the theme you are using needs the images to be a certain size otherwise they end up looking weird.
