Can you please make my site visible when the url is entered in the url bar?
-
Hi WordPress, I’m writing for help with one of my WP sites – syntaxandstyle.com
I had noticed that every page simply showed “syntaxandstyle.com” in the url bar. So, if I were on the “About” page for instance, the url bar didn’t show “syntaxandstyle.com/about. This puzzled me. So I checked my domains and could see that the primary domain was “syntaxandstyle.wordpress.com” In trying to fix that (i.e. change it to “syntaxandstyle.com” I realized there was a message from WP about something needing to be changed (DNS?) and I ended up going to the original hosting site (1and1) and making changes that I thought would rectify the situation. But all I’ve succeeded in doing is making my site not show up at all. Can you please help!? Thanks. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
You are now currently hosting with 1and1, so it would be best to speak with them about your site as I wouldn’t be able to help you.
If you would like to host with us, you would have to update the nameserver to:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COMFor more information, please visit the help documentation provided by the registrar and our support page:

Hi, thanks.
I had already changed the nameserver at 1and1 to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM NS2.WORDPRESS.COM NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
and the message on their end was that all was well for hosting at WP.
The thing that’s making me crazy is that the site was showing fine on WP till a couple of hours ago ( and had been for months!) before I tried to make syntaxandstyle.com the primary.
Any other thoughts?
(In the meantime I’ll look at the 1and1 set up again and run through all the instructions again.) -
It’s at step 3 in the instructions link you sent (above) that things go wrong. If I leave it on the syntaxandstyle.wordpress.com the site shows (with syntaxandstyle.com showing in the url address bar — but for every page, i.e. not syntaxandstyle.com/about for example). Anyway, I’ve switched it back to syntaxandstyle.wordpress.com and the site is back online. I guess I’ll leave well enough alone. But it looks kind of junior league to not have each page have a / and the page name, like “about” or “portfolio” etc.
Thanks. -
Hi there,
I’m afraid there isn’t a way to display your custom domain when managing your blog, and you’ll need to use your WordPress.com blog address for that.

Well since I’ve paid for mapping syntaxandstyle.com, I would like that to show rather than syntaxandstyle.wordpress.com/whatever.
Can you fix the mapping? -
Isn’t there a place on the dashboard where I choose to use the url w/o wordpress in it? I seem to remember choosing to have syntaxandstyle.com show in the url bar. I know I paid for it.

Happiness and joy. I just re-watched the mapping video on your help page and confirmed I’d done everything right. I wondered if maybe the propagation hadn’t yet finished. So, I again reset the primary domain as syntaxandstyle.com and then put that address in the url bar on a new tab and the site loaded! Yay! Also, somehow it now also shows:
http://syntaxandstyle.com/about/
on the about page and all other pages show their extensions as well!
So, I somehow fixed the initial problem as well.
Thank you for listening!!!
Several years and many sites into WP, I’m still loving it.
Thanks! -
I’m glad it all worked out! Sometimes the propagation can take up to a couple days. Anyways, happy blogging and happy holidays. :)
