I have a free wordpress.com account and would like to post an ad for my own product (an ebook that I sell on another website). Is that allowed?

Yes what you describe is a new product created by yourself and you can link to it.

On your blog you can sell only products you personally create or services that you personally provide. Only Blogs with the Business Bundle upgrade can equip their blogs for ecommerce.
