    Hi!

We don’t have a guide in place for adding a privacy policy. However, here’s a decent guide from a blogger that I read frequently:

    http://john.do/privacy-policy/

Just a note, privacy policies are normally required when you’re using Google AdSense, Amazon Affiliate links, or other advertising services that make use of cookies.

Currently, WordPress.com blogs are not permitted to add their own display advertising from Google Adsense. You are more than welcome to use Amazon affiliate links though provided they are within the text of your blog (not linked images in the sidebar). You can read more about our advertising policy here:

Does that help to answer your question?

So do I not need one then? I was told I do by an outside third party but they may not know the wordpress situation or rules. I had no idea that you had to put that on a blog. But if I am not using the things you mentioned then maybe I don’t need one. I am hoping to be able to be part of the Word Ads program at some point. Not sure how much traffic I need for that, but when I do become part of it will I need a privacy policy then or no because you don’t use cookies? Thank you!

    Hi there,

WordPress.com does not require you to have a privacy policy on your blog when using affiliate links or if you’re accepted into the WordAds program in the future. However, you’re free to add one if you would like. Does that make sense?

I apologize for the misunderstanding regarding cookies. We do use cookies to identify and track visitors at WordPress.com as explained here:

    Privacy Policy

Our WordAds program does using cookie-targeting to serve up appropriate ads to visitors.

However, you are not required by WordPress.com to display a privacy policy on your blog.

So I am okay legally if I don’t have a privacy policy? Just a little confused because an outside source told me I need one.

Also, how does wordpress determine who can be in the WordAds program and how do we find out if we are accepted?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

    Please see my answers below:

So I am okay legally if I don't have a privacy policy? Just a little confused because an outside source told me I need one.

WordPress.com does not require you to have a privacy policy. Currently, you aren’t using affiliate links (it doesn’t look like) or display ads on your site so you should be fine. However, you’re welcome to add one if you would like. There’s really no harm in adding one. We just don’t require it!

Also, how does WordPress determine who can be in the WordAds program and how do we find out if we are accepted?

Acceptance into the WordAds program is based on a variety of factors including site appearance, traffic levels, regularity of content, etc. If you are approved for the WordAds program, you will be notified that the WordAds program is active on your site. You can read a bit more about the selection process for WordAds here:

Ok, I will look into adding one to cover all my bases. It’s all just so confusing on what I have to include…I’ll take a look at those links you sent.

As for WordAds, thanks for the info. My views have been increasing lately so I was just curious how it was all determined. I’m guessing they track for high views over a long period of time.

Views and traffic are definitely two of the metrics they use to determine whether you would be a good fit for WordAds. Creating fantastic regular content and having a clean layout also helps as well. Someone will reach out shortly if your application has been accepted!

Thank you. I have been up since November, so I know it takes time. I guess the content being fantastic would depend on if the person looking is interested in recipes and food! But I definitely post regularly and try to post good looking food and enticing recipes :) I am working on cleaning up the layout all the time. I also like a nice clean cut look. Thank you!
