Can you restore legacy widget WordPress Popular Posts to my blog?
-
I recently deleted the legacy widget WP Popular Posts in order to refresh it in my blog sidebar, but it disappeared altogether – my usual title for the widget was “Most Viewed Today”. The only widget available that comes close to it is the Top Posts and Pages widget, which is not as readable or as attractive as the legacy Popular Posts widget, for these reasons:
- the thumbnail in the Top Posts and Pages widget is too small when set up as a horizontal grid, currently the way it is viewable on my blog.
- the title of the post or page appears under the very small thumbnail in the horizontal grid, and as every title is not exactly the same length as any other, a long title stretches the space downwards next to a thumbnail with a short title leaving large and uneven spaces under the thumbnails across the grid, whereas the old Popular Posts widget was a vertical stack that cut every title to the same number of characters next to the more attractive larger featured thumbnail.
- Hovering over the thumbnail in Top Posts and Pages does not show the title of a post, nor does the thumbnail darken to show the title even if it does allow clicking on it to go to the post.
- the thumbnail is far too big if Top Posts and Pages widget set up as a vertical stack – I have always shown ten posts in the legacy widget, but with the vertical stack in this widget the list is far too long and thumbnail far too big in comparison with all other gallery images in the sidebar.
- I could tell from the old legacy widget WP Popular Posts which posts were actually receiving a lot of views that week – and that information helped me to review each post, correct any errors and generally update the info and coding. However, this Top Posts and Pages widget seems to be dragging up random posts, not the most frequently viewed within a certain time – eg. a week or month, whichever I’ve opted.
- Is there a code I can put in my CSS option to reinstate legacy widget WP popular Posts widget?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there!
I was able to find a copy of that legacy widget from one of my test sites and add it to your site.
Could you please check the very last Legacy widget on the Sidebar section? Feel free to update its settings according to your needs.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi nigeljoy, what a surprise! Many thanks for this – I have retained the newer block Top Posts and Pages widget as well as putting the Legacy widget before it in the sidebar. I might be pushing my luck, but is there a way to enlarge the thumbnail a little in the Legacy widget?

Hi nigeljoy again,
I remember now asking the same question back in 2015 – at the end of this conversation – https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/gateway-theme-how-to-increase-size-of-headers-apart-from-blog-title/
And no, increasing the size from 40px to 70px using the code given to me then as –
.widget_top-posts .widgets-list-layout .widgets-list-layout-blavatar {
max-width: 40px;
}– didn’t increase the size of the thumbnail so much as made it very blurry and unattractive. So, is there anything else I can try?
Many thanks again, nigeljoy and to all previous WP staffers on this topic

You’re welcome!
Unfortunately, I do not see a way to increase the size of the image in the Legacy Popular posts widget, even using CSS code as the image width and height are hard coded in the code provided by this legacy widget.
I reviewed the archive of your site, and it appears you were using this legacy widget to display as “Image Grid”. If you wish to show a larger thumbnail, I suggest selecting “Image Grid” option on the widget settings.
Let us know if you have any questions.

Back to normal! Love this old Popular Posts Legacy widget in Image Grid setting because the thumbnail is readable and the right size for the sidebar; mouseover gives the title of the post; and “popular post ” within the chosen time frame seems accurate, compared with the block widget Top Posts and Pages which appears to fall short in all three aspects (at least in my wrangling of it).
Great support! Thanks nigeljoy and cheers! Hope to meet again!
