Can you transfer a file made on here to another host?

Can you transfer a file made on here to another host? Can you create a website on here for free then transfer the file to another host for free?

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  • Hi there,

Yes, WordPress is an open platform, so it is possible to start a site here on WordPress.com then transfer it to another hosting provider. There is a guide here you can follow: https://move.wordpress.com/

Additionally, if you need advanced functionality (FTP, source code access, the ability to upload plugins and themes) that is possible without moving away from WordPress.com.

Instead you can upgrade to our WordPress.com Business Plan, which adds all the same advanced functionality you would have using WordPress on another hosting provider, but with the advantages of being on our managed wp-only hosting environment. More info about the Business Plan here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks. Since all all themes on WordPress may not match those with our new host. Is it better just to create the site in WordPress, but on our new host’s site?

My questions come after reading this:

“You can move all the content from your current site to your new self-hosted WordPress site, but themes and widgets cannot be moved, so you’ll want to set up a new theme on your site.”

  • Hi there,

All the themes we offer on WordPress.com, also have versions that work with the open source, self-hosted version of WordPress. So you can create a site with us, and should you later decide to move your content to another host, you’ll be able to install the self-hosted version of the same theme over there.

But you’d need to re-install the theme, and re-do any customizations you want, as it’s a different version of the same theme – the WordPress.com version itself cannot be moved to another host.

Are you planning to host your site somewhere else? Or are you just considering possible future scenarios?

If you can give us a better idea of what you’re trying to do and what your end goal is, we might be able to give you a more detailed answer :)

Sorry for the delay. And, thanks for your time.

Yes, we will host the web page somewhere else.

We have a program in The Gambia. They teenagers and young adults will learn how to create a webpage on WordPress because WordPress is free. Then, we want to upload the site to our host, where we pay a flat fee to host many sites.

The only cost involved will be the site name, which our donors will pay.

    Thanks,
    Wayne

  • Thanks for explaining. I think that because you plan to host these sites elsewhere (at the end of each student’s project) it probably also makes sense to start and manage them there from the beginning.

WordPress is free software you can add to any host, and while it’s true you can start a new site (or sites) here for free, the fact that you could not migrate an exact copy of the finished site sounds like enough of a limitation to consider hosting the sites from the beginning.

That way when the student is done there is no additional work at the end of the project to export content here, import content there, and then take the time to set up the same theme (on your host) and configure the site so it looks like the one that was set up here.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
