Can you use any theme for an ecommerce website?

  I am currently using the Sydney theme to create my wordpress website but I am not sure whether I can create an ecommerce website with this theme? Do you have to use any particular themes for ecommerce?

  You cannot create a ecommerce store on WordPress.com free account. If you need to build a ecommerce website instead build website on self hosted wordpress and use woocommerce plugin.
