Canard theme featured content area
-
Hi i really need your help. I want each new post i make to be placed in the grid of the featured content area (like shown in the demo of the theme) so each time my 5 latest posts to be in the grid. Is there a way to do something like that?
Thank you for your time
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
The Featured Content grid area on the Canard theme is made up of up to 5 posts tagged with the tag you set in Customize > Featured Content. To have your 5 latest posts show there, you would add/remove the featured content tag each time you want to update which posts are featured up there.
To avoid having to manually switch the tag around so often, you may want to choose five of your best/top posts to tag and leave up there for a while. Or, alternatively, if you skip using the Featured Content area, your top five posts will display at the top of the site automatically (although not in the grid).
Let me know if you have any questions. :)

Thank you for your response.
What if tag all my posts with the featured tag? Shouldn’t only the 5 latest posts be put into the grid and the 6th one moved to the column underneath? If that doesnt work, is there a way around it? -
You’re welcome!
You could add the featured tag to more than five posts and with some themes that won’t cause any problems. I tested it on Canard with about 12 posts and it appeared to work fine, so you could give it a try and if you notice anything strange going on with it, let us know or un-tag some of them to see if that helps.
One thing to consider if you decide to do this though: In Customize > Featured Content, there is a checkbox that says “Display tag content in all listings.” If you leave that un-checked, it will show posts tagged with your featured tag only up in the featured content area. However, since Canard supports up to five Featured posts, the posts that are tagged as featured but not one of the five newest posts will not show up in the featured area or in the regular blog feed below.
To avoid having posts that don’t show up in the featured area or in the blog feed below (meaning they would be totally hidden from your readers), check the “Display tag content in all listings” to make sure all posts show in the regular blog feed, even if tagged as featured.
Hope that clears up your options so you can decide what will work best for your site. :)

Yet again thank you for your response!
I’ve done some tests and seems to work… But i encountered another related problem/bug. Each post that i tagged for the featured grid would not appear there UNLESS i would go to customize mode. Then it would load with the toolbar on the left side and the grid as it should be… When i leave the cutomize mode the site continues to look normal. This is not effected by the number of posts tagged for the featured grid. I had to do it for for posts fewer/equal or more than 5…
-
I tried both chrome & edge browsers and the problem is there. If i dont go into customize mode, the post even correctly tagged does not appear on the grid area. when i go into customize mode it corrects itself…
-
Hmm… that’s odd. When you add the tag to a post, then go into Customize to get that post to appear in the grid as you’ve described, is the featured tag still in there as expected? Or are you having to add the tag back in?
Have you tried adding the tag and then waiting a little while (without going into Customize) to see if the grid updates? Some featured content areas can take a little while to update. If you haven’t done this yet, please give it a try and let me know what happens.
I’ve tried to replicate it on my end, but haven’t been able to yet, as the new posts showed up in the grid after I published them in Chrome (without going into Customize after each time).
If it’s still happening, any more detail you can provide would be great for helping narrow down the cause. Thanks!
Have a great weekend! :)

I have tried everything but nothing changes. If i wont go into “customize” mode, the new posts will not appear on the featured grid. they just appear on the column underneath. When i go into customize everything appears as it should be…

Would you mind publishing a featured post from wp-admin (here: https://vgrv1.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php) and letting me know if it appears in the featured area right away (without going into Customize)?
I think I might have it narrowed down but need to double check depending on how this test goes on your end. :)

I hope so! It looks like a bug in the theme, so I’m working on gathering the details to report it. Can you try one more thing for me to help clarify one more detail, please?
Create a post from the new dash again (from here: https://wordpress.com/post/vgrv1.wordpress.com). Set the tag to “featured” and add a category to the post too, so that it’s not using the default “uncategorized” category. (Any category you create is fine, as long as it’s not the “uncategorized” one.) Publish, then refresh your site.
Did that method get the post show up right away in the featured area?
Appreciate your help figuring out what exactly is going on! :)

I’ve tried it and it does not work… same thing as before. I had to enter customize to get things rights.
-
The categories dont seem to work either… even though i have created a list of categories that are placed at the primary menu those do not appear in the “categories & tags” list. I used the “add a new category” button nad added some categories manually. But even though i assigned the new post to a category it does not appears when i choose this category from the primary menu.
-
Probably i’m doing something wrong… shouldnt the categories i’ve created and assigned as the primary menu be shown in “categories & tags” when i add a post? At least this is how it works with my other wordpress blog…
-
Sorry, the categories work fine, my bad. BUT the problem with the grid is not solved when i assign the post to a category.
-
And one quick off-topic question… on the left of each post there is a column with the writer name, date tags etc. Is there a way to hide the tags row? I ask because i discovered another small “bug”. In some cases, where i had long tags (for example “walking through a park”) the tags list was crawling in the text of the post… I’m really, really sorry for the whole fuss but really like the canard theme and i was dishearted with all those problems..
-
Ah, okay. Thanks for checking!
To clarify: The posts categorized under xbox1 and 3ds that are in your featured posts area now didn’t appear there until you did the Customize trick again?
For hiding the tags, you could do that with custom CSS if you decide to add an upgrade (like Premium) to this site that allows that. In Customize > CSS, you’d add this:
.entry-footer .tags-links { display: none; }
