I have not known that I have been paying for the domain for past years. I didn’t want to continue with the domain address and know that its default option let the payment go through. I would like to cancel the domain now and ask for the full refund for the periods that I was not aware of.

It looks like you had already stopped the automatic renewal, but I went ahead and cancelled the domain, removing it from your account, to avoid any future confusion.
Unfortunately I cannot offer you a refund for purchases made over a year ago. You should have received multiple emails reminding you that an automatic renewal was upcoming.

I don’t understand how the payment had been made when I didn’t ‘renew’ the domain each year.

You did have auto-renew activated. This is a feature designed to help people remember to renew their domains and not lose them by accident.
Auto-renew can be activated or disable at any time on the Store > My Upgrades page of your dashboard. You can read more here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/
