Cancel Domain
-
Hi, I would like to cancel my domain that I just did today. I tried to follow the procedures laid out, but got a message that I would not be able to contact anyone until a week from tomorrow. Given I only have two days to cancel the domain, this caused me to worry. What can I do to cancel and get the refund? And hopefully release the domain name so that I can get it (I have decided to self-host and use wordpress.org).
Thanks
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No need to cancel the domain name – you can just point the name servers to your new host and that is all – one point on domain name canceling – it can take a while for the domain name to be released back into the wild and someone else can always grab it ahead of you.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/
You can get a refund on the domain mapping even if you decide to keep the domain name registered here (WordPress.COM is a low cost registrar)
I will flag this for staff attention for the refunds.

I realize there is no need, but a number of the 3rd party hosts I am looking at include the domain registration in their price, and I don’t really want to double pay, even if it is a low annual price. I am not in immediate need of the domain, so it is ok that it can take a while, and I am not worried that someone else will grab it ahead of me, both because it is not very common, and because there are plenty of suitable variations (because it is not common).
Thanks for the quick response!

You can cancel your ownership of a domain purchased at WordPress.com and get a full refund within 2 days of purchase.
After cancellation, there is no guarantee the domain will become available to re-register. Is that okay?
Note that it’s possible to keep the domain registered here at WordPress.com and switch to another web hosting provider at any time by updating the name servers.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#update-nameserversIf your reason for canceling is that you made a typo in the domain name, you might consider keeping that domain to make it so other people who make the same typo will still get redirected to the right place.
Please reply by October 25 to confirm if you would like to cancel your ownership of the domain name scottishterrace.org.

It costs $17.00 per domain per year, and I never actually get ownership of the domain. Add that up over several years and the problem that if i leave wordpress entirely, I am still dependent on it through the domain, and I am just really frustrated. I want to use a third party like DreamHost, which includes the cost so I am not double paying it now and, they say,
We register domains in YOUR name and you’re free to do with them what you will! Take them to another hosting company if you’d like! We’ll be sad, but hey, they’re your domains!
So yeah, I am frustrated right now with wordpress.com. I should never have registered that domain from them–makes me want to just pick an entirely new one. Hopefully I can get this domain http://www.scottishterrace.org canceled. If I can pick it up on the other site, great, but if not, I still have no desire to keep on paying wordpress.com money annually to rent the domain name.

You’re more than welcome to do whatever you’d like with the domain. It is yours, you can direct it to another provider by changing nameservers or transfer it to another registrar (law prevents this for anyone, even Dreamhost, within 60 days of registering).
Once you cancel it, you give up your ownership, and I can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to register it.
Are you absolutely sure that you want to cancel it?
-
If I transfer it to another registrar after 60 days, or change nameservers, etc., do I still have to pay the annual wordpress.com registration fee in future years? I am fine with paying the fee this year, I just don’t want to keep on paying it

@scottishterrace
Those of us who have domains, regardless of where we purchase them from pay to renew our domain ownership every year. Alternatively we can pay in advance for more than one year. This is not unique to domain purchased here — it’s common practice everywhere. -
@scottishterrace – if you transfer your domain name registration to another registrar then you no longer pay WordPress.COM – you will need to pay the other registrar (either directly or built into the cost of the hosting package)

Auxclass, thank you, that is the answer I was looking for. I realize that I need to pay it out somewhere, I just didn’t want to double pay (my new host/registrar and wordpress.com). In that case, I won’t cancel my new domain, but will in 60 days or whatever the required time transfer it to my new host.
Thanks everyone for your help!

PS – the 60 days is an internet regulation to prevent fraud – so you have a 10 month window to transfer so no real rush.

rebelleculture, it looks like we already canceled and refunded this for you earlier today.
Did you need any further assistance?

macmanx – thank you for your help. I had the same question. I have no problem with wordpress at all. I love it. I just want to go to a different type of interface. I miss the old days when I used to be with silly Tripod in the mid 90s. Despite the fact they stunk, it was still so much fun. I’ve never gotten used to blog format. I won’t go back to Tripod, but just looking for something else. You provide a great value.
In any case, don’t do anything to my account. I’m not leaving just yet!

@worn808: You are comparing Tripod, a website maker, with WordPress.com, a blog maker. Apples and oranges. Really :-)
This being said, if you want to create a website rather than a blog, this might help.

If you have other questions, please create a new topic. -
@ airodyssey. Slow down your reading. I haven’t “confused” anything. I’m quite aware that Tripod is a website maker and wordpress is a blog maker. I think I made it quite clear that I enjoy wordpress, but never got used to blog format and wanted to go back to a website structure and that’s why I want to move on to a sitebuilder where I can build something organized by “areas” or “spaces” as opposed to a chronological list.
That said, thank you for the link to “using wordpress to create a website.” I had already begun trying to think of how I can make wordpress work for my aim and after reading “using wordpress to create a website” have decided to give it a go. So, thank you.

Sorry all, I see we’ve gotten off topic regarding “Cancel Domain” which was the initial thread.
