cancel hosting but keep domain

  Can you please cancel my monthly hosting plan but keep my domain? I didn’t know you can’t do custom themes and that’s what I wanted.

  Hey there!

  Hosting at WordPress.com is free. You haven’t paid for that.

  You have paid $18 for domain registration, however. You are welcome to use that domain here at WordPress.com with another site, or on a site hosted someplace other than WordPress.com.

  I need to cancel my domain please. I didn’t know that I had to wait 60 days to be able to transfer it, and that isn’t an option for me. So I need it canceled so I can buy the domain new through the other site. I understand I will not be getting a refund. That is fine.

  Brittany,

  I just want to warn you that if you cancel your domain name, there is no guarantee that you’ll be able to gain ownership of it again. I am more than happy to cancel, if you’d like. I am not trying to impede your progress at all. I just want you to be able to maintain ownership of the domain name, and not put it in danger of being bought by someone else.

  My suggestion is to keep the domain here, until your 60-days is up. In the meantime, you can map your domain here to your new site elsewhere. You do not need to keep your website at WordPress.com.

  Here are the instructions:

  Once the 60 days is up, you can transfer your domain:
  http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/transfer-domain-registration/

  The reason I advise to do it this way, is that you will retain ownership of the domain name. If canceled, the domain registrar has the option to hold onto it as long as they want, before releasing it for you to buy again. They can even sell the domain name at auction.

  Like I said, I will absolutely do what you want me to do. If you say cancel, I’ll do it ASAP. If you want help with mapping your domain to your other website, I can do that, too.

  The steps to map your domain can be found here:

  You will have to gather your name servers from Wix and then use that information to change your custom domain’s name servers here at WordPress.com.

  Once you get that information from Wix, you can adjust your domain settings here:
  https://brittanyreichmuth.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

  Simply click Edit Domain, then click Name Servers to make your adjustments.
