I have recently retired and wish to cancel my wordpress account. When I go to Manage Purchases the only option is to UPGRADE . There is no way to cancel that I can see,. How do I stop these guys extracting money automatically from my account (other than going to my bank)

To save you time we can try to determine relevant details such as which upgrade, which site URL, and which username account is this about.
How many username accounts and sites do you have? Maybe you failed to cancel one and disable auto renew.
You have to be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the site to access the dashboard. The Admin login link to the dashboard for every blog hosted by wordpress.COM is:

* You will have to replace “name_of_blog” with the actual blog’s name in that URL.
