Canceled wordpress but still cannot get domain name transfer

    I canceled my wordpress.com account but they are still holding the domain name. How do I get it released so I can use it? Thanks

    Hey there,

    If you’re wanting to use your domain at a different host, you should never cancel it at your current host – once you decide to cancel your domain, there is no guarantee that you will be able to reacquire it in the future. Someone else could gain access to it. Also, it usually takes a few weeks for your domain registration to clear and become available once you cancel it. There isn’t an exact time, however, so you’ll be checking consistently to see when it becomes available.

    If you want to keep using your domain but you don’t want to use WordPress.com anymore, you don’t have to cancel it. Instead, you can move the domain to another site

    If you recently registered the domain, you have to wait 60 days before you are able to transfer your domain to a different host, but in the meantime, you can use the domain with your site by pointing the nameservers over to your new host:

    I’ll be happy to contact the registrar to see if we can restore the domain back to your account, but I cannot guarantee that we will be able to get the domain back.

    Thanks so much for responding. I actually tried the transfer first, but I never had the words “transfer domain” under my domain. Just an edit button which would also not allow a transfer. I am new to this, so read first about trying to transfer the domain. I have no idea why there was no ability to transfer the domain name in the first place. I tried calling the domain name holder (domains by proxy LLC) and they said the only one who can release it is wordpress.com

    You were only about a day or two away from being able to transfer the domain. You have to wait 60 days before being able to transfer it and the domain was registered on 2/28.
