canceling account

Hi,
If I cancel my account does this release my domain name?
I have been trying to read and watch videos on how to change them but I really dont understand what I am doing.
SO if one closes their account does the domain name get released by wordpress.com ?
I have the domain registered with another company.
Is there a reason why I can not change the A and CNAME in my files?Lost and confused

smithersphotography.com.au was mapped to smithersphotography.wordpress.com but I can see you cancelled this upgrade earlier today. The domain itself is registered through GoDaddy though.
The domain is pointing to WordPress.com but it can be pointed to another host by logging in to your GoDaddy account and updating the DNS there.

Cancelling a custom domain (whether it was registered through WordPress.com or another provider) won’t mean it becomes available for use straight away. But in this case you only cancelled a domain mapping upgrade — the domain is still registered to you through GoDaddy and ready to be used again.
Closing your WordPress.com account would also delete smithersphotography.wordpress.com and mean that address is unavailable for use in the future, even on a new site.

Thank you for your help, I was going crazy trying to work out were to change the DNS and had thought it was locked at wordpress.com.
I will get onto Godaddy now and see if they can help me.Thank you again.
