Canceling accounts not allowed? This a cult?

Not allowing members to delete their own accounts is unacceptable.

I find it highly suspect that members are not allowed to cancel their own accounts. Just let it sit “inactive”? You serious? Even *making* it inactive is hard to figure out. This behavior on the part of wordpress is unacceptable.

It is actually for your protection as it prevents someone from creating a new account under your username and impersonating you. You can remove all personal information you entered into your account except for the email address you signed up with and you can easily change that to a throwaway address, thus rendering your account inactive and inaccessible. No offense, but I’m not real worried about anyone impersonating me. In fact, that’s the very least of my concerns.
