Canceling bluehost account but want to keep my website.

I want to switch from domain mapping from BlueHost to purchasing the domain from WordPress.com. How can I do that? I want to keep ashleyjomaier.com but cancel my BlueHost account (remove domain mapping and use the regular domain purchasing option.)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • WordPress.com doesn’t accept incoming domain transfers. So if you already own the domain, the only way to use it with your WordPress.com site is via Domain Mapping upgrade, which you are already doing.

I suggest you continue your current setup. i.e. keep your registrar as BlueHost and map it to WordPress.com site.

Because, the only other option is to let the domain expire and purchase it from WordPress.com but if you let the domain expire, then there is no guarantee that you will be able to buy it back. It is risky and you may lose your domain permanently.

I have had a horrible experience, beyond horrible, with BlueHost. I am going to cancel my account with them. I wanted to check to see what I could do, but it sounds like all I can do is hope to snag my url again. Correct? FYI, BlueHost assured me, multiple times, that I could transfer my domain to WordPress. They even gave me a BlueHost support link they said would show me how to do it. Then, they told me WordPress is hosting my site and that I have been charged by BlueHost for hosting my site for several years now, but they have not, in fact, been hosting my site. They said WordPress is doing it and ensured me, again, that I can transfer my domain to WordPress.com.

This is not true. WordPress.com doesn’t accept incoming domain transfers. Could you share the support link that BlueHost gave you?

  • It is unfortunate that you had a bad experience with BlueHost. But once you map your domain to your WordPress.com, once a year you pay them the domain renewal fee. You can even set it to pay automatically using your credit card. You don’t need to talk or deal with them.

The problem is BlueHost has been charging me over $400 a year. Support told me I don’t get hosting even though they are making me pay for it.

This is the link Priya from customer service gave me: https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/transferaway. It doesn’t mention WordPress.com but Priya assured me I can do this to transfer to WordPress.com. I can send the chat transcript if you’d like.

here is how you make your custom domain name work with your blog here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

you can’t transfer a domain name to WordPress.COM – they are not set up for incoming transfers – does not matter what Blue Host says – can’t be done

you could however transfer your registration to another registrar if you want – some friends use name cheap

Thanks, auxclass. I’ve already mapped my domain…long ago. Honestly, I think I’m just going to start over again so I can have everything in WordPress.com. I forgot to mention BlueHost is still making me pay for a website I closed in 2013 but someone else is using it now.

  • @ashleyjomaier

https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/transferaway is to take your domain away from BlueHost. But, WordPress.com does not accept incoming transfers.

As @auxclass mentioned, if your ashleyjomaier.com is important to you, you could transfer it to another registrar and map it to WordPress.com site from there.

If you don’t care about ashleyjomaier.com, then let it expire and buy a new domain from WordPress.com. Here are some top level domains offered by WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#available-domains

You can perhaps register a .org or .net site.

It depends on what would you like to do. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
