Canceling domain name through 1and1…to purchase same name through WP
-
I recently purchased a domain name from 1and1 to be hosted using WordPress, however, I didn’t realize there was a domain mapping annual fee. Within 2 days of purchasing the domain, I cancelled with 1and1 so I could simply just register with WordPress and avoid the hassle of using 2 companies. On 1and1’s site they specifically say that once you cancel, your domain will be available again. It’s been almost a week and when I try to register through WP, it still says it’s already registered. How long will I have to wait to get it back? I was told it would be effective immediately. Help!

An update: this is not for my wordpress site, but for a friend who is starting a small business. The website is done, but we’re just waiting on the domain name.

According to the domain’s WHOIS info, the domain will expire (and be available again) in November 2015. I would check with 1and1 and ask them if they can (and will) release the domain or not.
For future reference — instead of cancelling a domain to register it somewhere else, you can transfer it from one place (1and1) to another (WordPress). Perhaps this is still possible with 1and1, it’s worth asking.

I could still transfer through 1and1 by reactivating it, however, is there a fee for transferring to WordPress? Like there is an annual fee for domain mapping?

WordPress.COM is not set up for incoming domain name transfers
You will need to pay for both Domain Name Registration & Domain Mapping no matter where the name is registered, that is assuming you want to have a custom domain name mapped to your blog here.
There is no way to not pay for the domain mapping by changing registrars
