Canceling my Premium Domain

  • Unknown's avatar

A few days ago my premium domain name (sahainan.com) expired. I want to permanently delete this domain, as I am moving to another blogging platform and wish to purchase the same domain name.

WordPress is making this a very difficult process. I’ve tried everything suggested on the support page to no effect. Can someone please help me?

    Hi @sahainan,

Sorry that you want to move to another blogging platform.

It may be best for you to renew your domain name with WordPress.com (as there is still time to renew, about 10 to 14 day grace period) and either just point the domain to the servers at your new host or transfer the domain to your new host if possible.

Here is some info of how to change the name servers.

Letting a domain name expire is never a good thing with any registrar as it can complicate things. If it expires, it may take some time before you have access to it again.

If you need help from a staff member, then please type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread.

    Hope this helps!

    @meohmeohmy

Thanks, but I have already purchased a premium subscription to a different platform. All I need to do now is register the new domain once it becomes available. I don’t really see the logic in having a domain name purchased through WordPress while having a website registered with a different platform. It unnecessarily complicates things. I want to have everything in one place.

Any idea how long it will take for the domain to become available again?

depends on the registrar – but a delete and revert to the wild to be purchased again runs around 60 days – the registrar is not obligated to release the domain name – they may choose to auction it off or a domain name squatter might purchase the name and hold it hostage for a large ransom

better to transfer the name to your new registrar – but the domain name needs to be in good standing I think to transfer it

    Hi,

I am trying to delete a domain (private), but here’s the info displayed when I try to do this.

Warning! You cannot delete a site if it has a domain registration upgrade because you need access to the site in order to get to the domain manager.

    Any help? Thank you!

  • @sahainan, if you cancel the domain here, it can be a few months (about 80 days) before it will become available again. That’s assuming it isn’t auctioned off or otherwise purchased by someone else in the meantime.

It looks like you’ve renewed now, but for anyone facing this question, please renew the domain here, point it to the new host (here’s how), then transfer it (adding another year to your registration) when you’re ready.

  • @matteotacconi if your situation is just like @sahainan’s, please use the same advice.

Otherwise, if you’re positive you’d like to cancel the domain (and possibly not get it back) get in touch with support here and we’ll help you do that: http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact
