Cancell domain name

  I cancelled my service and need to use the domain name with Godaddy. WordPress still kept the domain name up as mine…and hasn’t cancelled my account. How do I use this domain name elsewhere?

  Hi there,

  As was stated in the warning when you cancelled the domain, cancelled domains are not released immediately and there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to use the domain again in future. Cancelling a domain means you give up ownership of it and you lose any claim you have to the domain. You should only do that if you don’t want to use the domain at all any more.

  As you cancelled the domain on the same day you registered it, it should be released again early next week at which point you can register it somewhere else, provided someone else doesn’t register it first.

  I can also still restore the domain to your WordPress.com account for the next few days, and then you can point it to another hosting provider instead. It’s not possible to transfer a domain to another registrar until you’ve owned it for at least 60 days.

  Please let me know if I should restore the domain or if you’re going to wait for it to be released.

  The problem is that I didn’t cancel…I went through a “happiness engineer” chat. They canceled for me but did not let me know about the domain being held and not being able to transfer. I should have transferred it before canceling maybe…

  Silly me. I just thought being able to get a domain name so effortlessly, I would be able to transfer it just as quick. It truly is unfortunate that WordPress.com doesn’t support WordPress.org. This was just unnecessarily complicated.

  I made a change to the name and just started over again elsewhere. Thank you for the response.

  Sorry about that. My colleague should have made the implications of cancelling clear to you before proceeding. I’ll follow up with them about that to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

  You could actually have kept the domain registered with us and still use it with a WordPress.org site, so I can still try getting the domain back for you if you want. But otherwise if you want to continue with the domain you have now that’s fine as well.
