Cancelled domain
-
I purchased a domain through WordPress, but cancelled it a couple minutes later because I wanted to purchase the domain elsewhere and make sure I can customize the HTML of my theme later on. If I have cancelled the domain, would that mean I cannot purchase that domain again? Would it be possible to purchase it again? Or would I be able to undo the cancellation and just upgrade to the custom design option (with custom HTML/if that is the best way to go about it)?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
If you want to keep the domain it would be best to un-cancel the domain, but this is not guaranteed as once it’s released the domain is fair game and anyone can purchase it. I’m not sure when the domain will be released, but usually it’s within a couple days.
Just a note, even with the Custom Design upgrade you would be able to edit CSS.
So, we can go about this in 2 ways:
1) I can send you a manual payment request to un-cancel the domain:
abakerinblack.com
Then, I can make a request to un-cancel the domain. If this is not possible, I can provide you a full refund.
2) You can wait until the domain is available and purchase it through a different registrar. Just note that you should check daily as we wouldn’t know exactly when it would be released and someone may purchase it once it is.
Let me know if you have any questions with this. And, let me know how you would like to proceed!

If I use custom design, would I also be able to edit HTML? I’d like to be able to fully customize and re-work the theme and layout.

You can edit the CSS, but not HTML. If you want to change the complete layout of the theme, it would be better to move to WordPress.org.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities. At WordPress.com, we provide hosting, support, and tons of features for blogs. Users also have the option to purchase a variety of upgrades to customize the look and feel of their blog. WordPress.org is a software for self-hosted sites. With WordPress.org, users are provided access to all backend files and can upload custom themes and plugins.

I would like to move to wordpress.org. How would I be able to move that domain to wordpress.org after I figure out my own hosting?

If we are able to get the domain back you can keep it registered here and just update the nameservers to your new host:
You’ll need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)
Just note that this means your domain is still registered through us and just hosting elsewhere. So you would need to keep the registration renewed yearly with us in addition to your new host. After 60 days from the date of registration you can transfer out your domain elsewhere (there is a lock placed on newly registered domains as per ICANN rules). When that time comes, the guide below explains how to transfer the domain name to another registrar, including how to access the authorization (EPP) code:

If I were to just leave it and wait until the domain is released, approximately how long will it take?
-
Please read:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/#redemption-period
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/#domain-released
Roughly 80 – 90 days but as the support docs states there is no guarantee that it will EVER be available. The domain registrar can auction it off to a domain squatter. -

That’s the thing. I’m not so sure. Usually after a cancellation it could take a couple days to weeks. I’m not entirely sure – the registrar determines that.
If you were to get it back you can keep the domain registered with us and just point your nameservers to your new host for your self-hosted site.

Okay, thank you. May I try and get it back through wordpress then? I’m sorry for any inconveniences.

Hi there,
I just checked a couple minutes ago and found that it has been released and available for re-purchase. You can now purchase the domain wherever you wish.
Cheers!
