Cancelled domain Mistake
-
I accidentally registered a custom domain through WordPress and realized my error and cancelled 5 minutes later. When given the warning that I may not be guaranteed the domain name after cancellation, i assumed this mean that I was giving it up and therefore at risk of having someone else register it. Now I am reading on the forums that this really meant that wordpress may never release the domain, meaning I (nor anyone else) could ever register it anywhere else? I would really like to use this domain, and it was a simple mistake on my part, as I am new to web hosting. Is there anything that can be done in order for me to register this domain again?

You were partially right here. Releasing a custom domain does put it at risk for someone else registering it. In addition to that the cancellation process is a long one, so once a domain has been cancelled it can take up to 90 days for the domain to be available for anyone, including the original owner, to repurchase.

This is not true of custom domains. The posts you were reading were referring to .wordpress.com domains. For example if you were to delete your site https://disabilitypositiveconsulting.wordpress.com/ completely, the url “https://disabilitypositiveconsulting.wordpress.com/” would not be available for you or anyone else to reuse.

If you want the domain back now, I can try to retrieve it for you. Sometimes if cancellations are caught fast, we can get them back. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait for it to process and become available again.
Let me know how you want to proceed and that’s what we’ll do!
