Cancelled domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

    Good morning,

I cancelled my domain name megatalanta.co.uk last week, because I wanted to create a website on GoDaddy rather than WordPress, as I was find WordPress difficult to understand.

I was under the impression I could cancel the domain, and then buy again through GoDaddy, but this is proving difficult, it says the domain name is still in use.

Please could you let me know how long it usually takes for a domain to become available again, or if I can recreate it in WordPress and transfer over? I’m sorry, I didn’t realise that was a possible option until reading further into this issue.

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Best wishes,
    Meg

Does anyone have any ideas/advice on my query above please? Thank you, Meg

    Hello!

Thank you for reaching out! Cancelling a domain doesn’t immediately make it available elsewhere, especially for .co.uk domains, which have additional restrictions. They won’t be released from the domain registry for a full year.

To restore your domain, considering you used the free first-year domain credit with your Starter plan, you’ll need to pay the $8.00 USD registration fee. If you’re in agreement, we can send you a payment request to complete the registration process. Once restored, you’ll be able to point it to a new host. After 60 days, you’ll have the option to transfer the registration to another provider.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help!

Thank you very much for your help, so if I restore the domain, will it then take 60 days before I can transfer to a GoDaddy account? Or can I transfer immediately?

  • Unknown's avatar

You can change the nameservers immediately to use the ones of your choice, but you will need to wait the 60 days to transfer the registration.

I hope that clarifies things! Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for your help. Just to clarify, if I reinstate the domain name now, I can then use it on the GoDaddy website I have created straight away? Or would I have to wait 60 days?

Yes you can connect the domain to a site elsewhere. When you have owned the domain for at least 60 days you can transfer it away from wordpress.com. Those rules apply to domains purchased anywhere.

If you already own a domain name with another provider, you can use that domain with your WordPress.com site. This guide will help you choose whether to connect or transfer the domain. Commonalities Between Connecting and Transferring Certain things are the same when choosing to connect or transfer your domain: Your domain will display your WordPress.com website. Your site’s address

PS: I am curious as to why you chose to use the GoDaddy website builder and what aspects of it you feel is preferable to a wordpress-built site. I’m sure staff here would also be interested in case improvements can be made.

Thank you so much for your help. Please could you send me the link to reinstate the domain?
Of course, I found when I was on WordPress I found it difficult to understand the format and putting the content in order, and GoDaddy seemed to have a complete template which worked in a simple way. I’m not massively tech savvy when it comes to this sort of thing, so the simpler the better I found.

please could you send me the payment link to complete the registration?
    many thanks.

Thank you for confirming. I’ve just sent the payment request to the email address associated with your account.

After you’ve completed the payment, could you please leave a comment in this thread to let us know it’s been paid? Unfortunately, we don’t receive notifications when payments are made through these requests so your cooperation is appreciated.

    Thank you very much!

thank you very much, that’s all been paid.

  • Hello –

I’ve been able to restore this domain to your account. The verification email for your contact details has also been delivered. Please let me know if any other help is needed at this time.

    Take care!

Thank you very much. I have now linked this to my GoDaddy website, but it came up with a notification that I needed to do something with the DNS – when I go onto the website domain, it is linked to a holding page. Please could you advise how I change this to show my GoDaddy website?

Any help would be greatly received, thank you.

To ensure your website functions correctly, it’s essential to update your DNS settings to point to GoDaddy’s servers. We’ve prepared a helpful guide to assist you through the process: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/change-name-servers/#changing-name-servers-to-point-away-from-word-press-com
