Cancelled domain, when can I use it with a different blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

By mistake I created a second blog and purchased a domain for it.

I wanted to use the domain I had for the other blog with this one. I cancelled it in the original domain, now I want to attach it to this blog. How does it take to release the domain name? When can I attach it to this blog?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no guarantee it will become available for purchase again at all. What is the URL of the domain in question? Which registrar did you purchase it from?

Once a domain is cancelled, it can take several weeks for the registrar to release it, and there is no guarantee that it will be released. I liken it to purchasing a shirt and then returning it to the store – the store may return the item to the racks for purchase again, or it may not.

As timethief asked, please let us know what the domain is so we can check on its current status.

I purchased the domain through WordPress.com. I’m actually trying to move the domain name that I bought with the WordPress site happycampersvintagedotcom.wordpress.com to http://happycampersvintage.wordpress.com. The only way I could think to do it at the time was to cancel the domain request I had made within the 48 hour cancellation window.
I guess in the future I’ll never buy a domain name through WordPress. I’ll go with a third party and manage the pointing on my own.

I guess the larger question is, if I still own domain name and the cancellation hasn’t gone all the way through, then isn’t there some way I can just cancel the cancellation and move the domain name to the correct WordPress site?

The staffer cannot help you until you answer the question: what domain name was it?

I’m confused in that I thought I already stated that I’m trying to move the domain name from http://happycampersvintagedotcom.wordpress.com to http://happycampersvintage.wordpress.com. I guess I wasn’t clear enough, thank you for pointing that out.

I also paid the $13 to have the domain name mapped to the correct WordPress site. However, now WordPress is telling me:

We’ve completed the technical setup on our servers to successfully map your domain happycampersvintage.com to your WordPress.com blog. Now you have to edit the name servers at your registrar to point to us.

The confusing part is that I created this Domain originally through WordPress, so I don’t know how to contact the registrar.

    Hi @bermudalamb,

It looks like there is some confusion regarding the domain registration and mapping. On your current account, you have purchased the domain mapping for happycampersvintage.com to point to happycampersvintage.wordpress.com. Domain mapping is only useful for domains that you have registered elsewhere since you need to change the name servers as you mentioned.

It looks like you may have registered happycampersvintage.com under a completely different user account previously and then cancelled the domain. When a domain is cancelled, it is sent back to the registrar. The domain happycampersvintage.com is no longer registered at WordPress.com.

In order for this domain to work correctly, you will need to repurchase the registration once the domain becomes available again for purchase.

Since the domain mapping upgrade you have purchased is not going to be effective until you register the domain, I went ahead and refunded the charge on your account.

When the domain becomes available again for purchase, you will see a green box on the top of the page here next to the .com version of your domain:

    http://www.who.is/whois/happycampersvintage.com

At that point, you’ll need to go through the registration process listed here:

    Register a New Domain

Please make sure you register the domain on the correct blog.

Let me know if you have any additional questions!

Thank you for the feedback. I’ve also gone ahead and purchased 2 other domain names through domain.com. How do I get these mapped to this WordPress site?

Yep – that “Map Existing Domains” page should do the trick! Let us know if you run into any trouble.
