Cancelled plan, domain deleted?

Hi, I cancelled a premium subscription I had with a domain I purchased and subsequently transferred from google. It seems by removing my subscription, the domain was removed and I was expecting it to be relinquished back to Google. However, the name servers still point to wordpress and I am wondering if it’s a matter of time or stuck in limbo? Can anyone help? Thank you!

No, unfortunately cancelling does not automatically transfer a domain back to the previous registrar. Typically when you cancel a domain, there should be warnings about it becoming unavailable. It will be on hold for a few days, then it will go into redemption status:
When you transferred here we paid for another year for your domain registration and we aren’t able to undo that, but if you’ll pay the $18 for that, we can restore the domain to your account so you can use it as you like. You won’t be able to transfer it back right away (there’s typically a 60 day wait) but you can change the name servers as needed, then transfer again when you’re ready.
If you’d like us to proceed, let us know right away, and we’ll send an invoice for the domain price. We’ll just want to get that paid for and restored before it enters domain redemption, as that takes longer / costs more.

Thank you very much for the helpful answer. I think I would like to repurchase the domain registration, but it will take 60 days to transfer the domain back? I am trying to build a website in WordPress.org as I found that fits my business’ needs better. Does that mean I cannot create a website and have it live during this time period?
I’m trying to decide if it’s better to purchase a different domain because I’d like to start working on the website, or if that’s possible I’d love to keep the old domain. Really appreciate the help!

The good news is that your domain is still under the grace period and can still be be recovered by us within the next 4 days. After that, we won’t have any control.
If you would like to do this, I have sent a payment request for the $18 domain registration fee to the email address on your account, since you have already received a full refund.
Once paid, please reply here to let us know, and we’ll recover the domain. Again, this will only be possible for the next 4 days. After that, we cannot guarantee when or even if you’ll be able to re-register the domain.
Once the domain is recovered here, you’ll be able to direct it anywhere simply by changing its name servers: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/change-name-servers/
And, after 60 days (another policy outside of domain registrar control), you’ll be able to transfer it elsewhere: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/

Thank you macman. So just to be clear, will I be able to set the DNS to my new host (siteground) and get wordpress.org set up and live using WordPress.com as the domain registrar? Then after 60 days I can potentially move it correct?

Can you update that at https://wordpress.com/me/account/ to the email you want, and then we can resend it for you.
I also double checked and we do have more than 4 days in this case, so at the moment you’re not at risk of completely losing the domain and we have time to get it restored for you :)

That is strange, (email visible only to moderators and staff) was the email on file. It seems all emails from wordpress stopped on May 15th after the cancellation. I just changed my account email to (email visible only to moderators and staff), so please resend! Thank you guys so much

I’ve gotten the email with the post reply so I’m confident the account is successfully linked, but I do not see any payment confirmation email in my inbox or spam. I will keep waiting but I wouldn’t think it would typically take over a couple hours? If the email doesn’t come through is there another way I can make this payment? Thank you

I can confirm we’ve just sent another email to the new address. The subject line should be ‘Payment request from Automattic Inc.’ — can you search for that? It might be ending up in spam.
If that still doesn’t work, would you mind updating the address once more? Perhaps your mail admin is blocking it for some reason.
