Cancelling a domain and buying it back again?

  • Unknown's avatar

I wanted to use WordPress.com at first but then I decided WordPress.org was the one I wanted to use. However, I got a custom domain name from wordpress.com which I paid for.

If I cancel the domain name, would I be able to buy it back through Bluehost? And how long will it take before the name becomes available again?

PLEASE do not cancel the domain if you have any intention of using it again. There is a very real chance that you will lose control of the domain permanently and at the very least, it will be unavailable to register for weeks.

Instead, please use these instructions to point your WordPress.com registered domain to Bluehost:

staff-ozmodiar I changed the name servers to the BlueHost ones. What exactly does that do? Can I now use the domain with BlueHost and WordPress.org software?

I’m pretty new at this so I would love the help. I can’t transfer the domain yet. I want to be able to use that domain on BlueHost and edit my site through WordPress.ord software. Is that possible?

    Thank you!

  • Can I now use the domain with BlueHost and WordPress.org software?

Yes. That is exactly what changing the nameservers will do. It points the domain to your bluehost server space.

One last thing, is there anything I have to do on the BlueHost side? or I just have to wait for it to take into affect?

  • You would need to talk to BlueHost’s support team. I am unsure what is required on their end to point a domain to their servers.

This document is a couple years old, but it indicates that you need to designate your domain as a “addon” domain in your BlueHost account. Which is pretty standard for most webhosts:

A Complete Guide to Add Addon Domain to Bluehost Account

But again, BlueHost support will have up to date instructions I am sure.
