Cannot access https://thegreatpatrioticwar.wordpress.com/

  • Unknown's avatar

I cannot access my WordPress site at https://thegreatpatrioticwar.wordpress.com/

When I go there I get an ‘insecure connection’ message in Firefox along with the following: ‘thegreatpatrioticwar.wordpress.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for bakuninmatata.wordpress.com. Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN’

Whenever I try to go to http://thegreatpatrioticwar.wordpress.com/ (without the ‘S’) I get redirected back to https://thegreatpatrioticwar.wordpress.com/ and get the same error message

I cannot access the WP-Admin for the site, and when I go to change the site address under ‘Settings’ I cannot change the https:// part, only the rest of the address.

    Please help

  • Hi there,

I was able to load fine your site thegreatpatrioticwar.wordpress.com on Firefox and even the HTTP version redirected me to the HTTPS one without any issue or error.

Can you please clear Firefox’s cache and try again? Also, can you try a different browser?

I cleared Firefox’s cache but I still get the same “insecure connection” error message. I also tried visiting the site with Google Chrome. The only difference is that Chrome will let me go ahead and visit the site anyway, whereas Firefox won’t let me visit the site at all.

I have noticed that every single one of my sites has this problem except for my primary site, bakuninmatata.wordpress.com. Trying to visit any of them gives me the same “insecure connection” message and “This site uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for bakuninmatata.wordpress.com. Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN”

It looks like this might be a problem with how the SSL is configured; it used to work as a wildcard for all my sites but now the SSL only appears to be configured for bakuninmatata.wordpress.com

  • The certificate is only valid for bakuninmatata.wordpress.com

This is wild that it’s not recognizing the other sites’ certificates. Can you let us know what version of Firefox you’re using?

Firefox says it is version 65.0.1 and it is the most recent version.

  • A few thoughts:

    – Can you try running FF in Safe Mode to see whether you have issues there?

    – Are you using anything like Avast? And does turning them off temporarily help this issue? I read a little info here that may help. Solution is at the bottom.

    – The above site mentioned this SSL test. You could run it against browsers that work and browsers that don’t to see what the difference is.

-I have the same issue with FF in Sade Mode.

-I am using BitDefender but it doesn’t seem to be an issue.

-I ran the SSL test but I cannot access the website with either Firefox or Google Chrome. With Chrome the error I get is:

    “Your connection is not private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from thegreatpatrioticwar.wordpress.com (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards). Learn more
    NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID

This server could not prove that it is thegreatpatrioticwar.wordpress.com; its security certificate is from bakuninmatata.wordpress.com. This may be caused by a misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection.”

The problem thus seems not to be on the browser side but with the security certificate.

  • To clarify, did you get that SSL message on this test site?
    https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/viewMyClient.html

It’s not even on our servers, so I’d be really surprised if it’s showing the same message there. That security certificate should not be picked up on that other site.

Ideally you should get a full page of output and you can compare the output of one browser to that of another.

I am using BitDefender but it doesn’t seem to be an issue

Can you clarify also how you determined this?

As I said before, no matter what browser I use—Firefox, Chrome—I get the “insecure connection” message, so I have no baseline for what a “good” test result is. I also know nothing about SSL or protocol tests, so I have no idea what any of that test output means.

I know BitDefender isn’t the problem because I turned it off and had the same problem. I don’t want to keep uninstalling and installing software either. I already lost a lot of saved info when I cleared the caches of my browsers.

Again, I don’t think the problem is on my end because I was able to visit my sites fine. Based on the error message, it appears to be an SSL misconfigeration on the WordPress side.

  • OK.

So no matter which browser you use, visits redirect every time, and always shows the wrong domain.

Does this also happen on every other WordPress.com site, such as https://twentyfourteendemo.wordpress.com/ ?

If you click the lock, in chrome for example, and click View Certificate, what do you see there for the first few lines?

And, is there any chance you could test a different computer? We haven’t been able to duplicate this here, even if we log in as you and try to visit your site.

    Hello,

So I was wrong and the problem was indeed on my end. Sorry about that.

It turns out it wasn’t BitDefender but another anti-virus program on my computer that was causing the issue. I uninstalled the program and that fixed it.

Thanks for your help and again I’m sorry for asserting the problem was on the WordPress end. I ate some humble pie.

  • No worries. You know I’ll bet the program will let you unblock a list of sites. You might consider looking at that. Cheers!
