Cannot access my site via wp-admin afte deactivating/reactivating jetpack
-
Hi there,
I changed my site theme today and after I had installed and saved it, it was working ok. In my wordpress dashboard, it said my theme needed 4 additional plugins which I downloaded, 2 of which I activated. After this my site became unavailable to me, although could be seen by my hubby in France on his laptop.
Through the wordpress settings page (for websites) I deactivated all my plugins as I had no access in the wp-admin browser page, thinking one of the new plugins would be the reason and if I deactivated all, then reactivated them one-by-one I could find the culprit. This resulted in my self-hosted battlemum site disappearing from my wordpress account entirely.
I’ve managed, on my phone, to reactivate jetpack and I can access my wordpress battlemum account and wp-admin pages for battlemum but I cannot access these on my laptop or pc. I’ve tried to install Jetpack via my pc/laptop but after inputting my website address and clicking ‘Install’ from the jetpack browser page it tells me my site is connected but I still can’t access my site via wp-admin and I only get site stats on wordpress, no settings or plugin details are there. If I deactivate jetpack my site disappears again from the wordpress websites setting page.
Can you shed any light on why this would happen and how I can go about fixing it? My site works fine on the WordPress app on my phone but not at all on pc or laptop? My site is still visible to others, including my hubby in France. I’ve reset my theme to the previous one using the dashboard on my phone app and made sure none of the new plugins are there and I still cannot access my site on pc or laptop.
I am desperately seeking help as I am a regular blogger and cannot do my blogging exclusively from my phone as I use photography software on my pc to edit pictures for blog posts. I haven’t had this happen to me before now.
Thanks in advance,
BattleMumThe site I need help with is BattleMum (www.battlemum.com or http://battlemum.com)

Hi @cathj77,
If I understand correctly, you are trying to re-connect your self-hosted http://battlemum.com/ site via Jetpack to your WordPress.com dashboard, allowing you post/manage it from there.
Does that sound right?
Also, what was the name of new theme that you installed and activated, requiring the extra plugins?
And is the ‘Manage Sites’ module in Jetpack active?
https://jetpack.com/support/site-management/I realize this is a WordPress.org related question, but will try and point you in the right direction :)

Hi,
Thanks for responding.
Yes that sounds about right. The theme I installed was one from themeforest called Aloha which in my dashboard said required extra plugins. I installed them and activated 2 and that’s when my site would no longer load in the browser. I couldn’t access my dashboard so had to use the plugins option on the WP site manager to deactivate plugins to see which one was the problem. I deactivated all my plugins and that’s when I lost my battlemum site from my site manager (dashboard was gone by now).
I tried to reinstall Jetpack and that only brought the stats section back to the WP site manager page but no access to my WP dashboard on desktop. The really strange thing is I have had access via my mobile WP app (one error popped up) and can access the wp-admin for battlemum through there. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling Jetpack to no avail. Still no desktop access. If I try to access Jetpack through the plugins option on the WP site manager I get an error which says “Error fetching plugins on BattleMum”. Same if I try to access settings “There was an error retrieving your site settings. Make sure Jetpack is up to date” which on mobile dashboard it is showing as up-to-date.
Even stranger my hubby can access my http://battlemum.com/wp-admin on his desktop but it’s not available on either my pc or laptop. I’ve cleared my cache and browsing history, and restarted both desktops, and I still have no access to my battlemum dashboard or options in WP site manager.
The new Aloha theme has been deleted along with the new associated plugins and I’ve reverted back to my old theme via my mobile app dashboard and still nothing.
I’ve tried everything I can think of to sort this mess out on my desktop and am lost now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can’t see a “managed sites” option in the Jetpack settings on my mobile app dashboard. Should I be looking somewhere else?

Hmmm. Ok…
I do know that a new version 4.2 of Jetpack was just released about an hour ago – about the time you started experiencing issues. This could also be a contributing factor, especially since it is a major release with many changes. If so, then things may take a little time to sync up and self-correct.
https://wordpress.org/plugins/jetpack/changelog/When you mention not being able to access your site on PC/Desktop, are you referring to the WordPress app?
Or have you tried logging into your site from a browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc.)?
And if you have tried accessing http://battlemum.com/wp-admin from a browser, what error messages – if any – are you seeing?
From what I can see, you are given the option to log into your site using either your WordPress.com account credentials or the site username/password. This tells me that Jetpack is installed and active.
If you can get to the login page, then maybe try using your site username/password instead of your WordPress.com credentials. If that gets you into your admin dashboard, then you’ll be able to look at the Jetpack settings.
I can also recommend using a different PC/Desktop if you are not able to get to the login page or access the internet on the current machine you are using.
And here is a link to Jetpack troubleshooting resources

Hi,
I started experiences problems at 1pm (GMT) today but made sure I updated Jetpack within the last hour on my mobile as I saw there was an update.
I’m not trying to use the WordPress app, it’s browsers such as Chrome and Edge.
The only error message I get is ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT (site can’t be reached, took too long to respond).
I had brief access on my husband’s pc but that too is now gone. I’ve no other way of trying now.
I no longer get an option to log in to get to the dashboard so I’m stumped as to what to do now.
I really do appreciate you trying to help me.

No problem. It can be stressful when web and tech stuff goes wrong.
The good news is that I can reach your site and login page. So it is not totally broken :)
However, you are getting the ‘timeout’ error message when trying to connect, so that does not help you.
There could be a number of reasons causing your site to hang up on loading – even a slow or bad internet connection (reboot your router perhaps?). But without access to the admin dashboard, it will be hard to troubleshoot. There may be some steps that you can take via FTP.
https://codex.wordpress.org/Common_WordPress_Errors#Connection_Timed_OutI would recommend reaching out to your hosting provider at this point, to make sure that there are no server problems and maybe see if the issue can be resolved on their side.
According to https://whois.domaintools.com/battlemum.com that would be http://d9.hosting/
I will also go ahead and tag your query with ‘modlook’, in case a Staff member may want to chime in here with some thoughts.

I did reset my router earlier on but that didn’t help.
Thanks again for your help. I’ll get in touch with hosting and see if they can help.
Thanks again for your time. I appreciate it.

Hi @cathj77 ! If you could at one point manage the site through Jetpack Manage but cannot access it at all directly from your own computer, it’s a pretty good sign your host has blocked you on that server.
After this my site became unavailable to me, although could be seen by my hubby in France on his laptop.
That’s another pretty solid sign. Speaking not as WordPress.com staff (since the site is not hosted here), but as someone who spent several years hosting WordPress installations elsewhere, I can say there are sever features meant to automatically block addresses for suspicious activity, and I’m guessing you were inadvertently caught in one of those.
Definitely get in touch with your host to see if you were blocked, then if you still can’t access wp-admin, post your errors and what not in the forums at https://wordpress.org/support . Good luck!
