Cannot access website from browser

Hello everyone,
first I need to explain a little my situation: I never used wordpress or any of its services; I do however know a little about web development, and a friend of mine that does not but have to work with a wordpress website sometimes asks me for advice.
He always managed the website thought the wordpress browser interface ( http://www.website.it/wp-admin/ ).This time the problem is after updating a plugin in the website he was unable to access it anymore; it just shows the error message
Fatal error: Can't use function return value in write context in /web/htdocs/www.pescain.it/home/wp-content/plugins/event-calendar-wd/includes/ecwd-cpt-class.php on line 97I tried to access through ftp with Firezilla, but I get the ‘530 authentication failed’ error; I think I have to set up an ftp account first, but I have no idea how to access my website to do so.
How can I access my content in another way? -

Unfortunately, this isn’t the right WordPress forum to help with that problem.
Plugin issues belong to the self-hosted WordPress site, the WordPress.ORG software, but this forum is for blogs hosted on WordPress.COM. The two versions are different and have separate forums. Please post your question at the WordPress.org forum: https://wordpress.org/support/.
