Cannot activate theme

  • Unknown's avatar

Created a new website (tried this with a blog ealier). When I try to change the theme, I do not see the layout of the new theme. I see what was created when I created the site. I do not remember this when creating my other two blogs.

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, I see melodystravel696393677.wordpress.com is using the new Hever theme. Is that the theme you changed to or the theme that the site was created with?

If Hever is not the theme you changed to, which theme did you select and did you see the “Thank you for choosing X” confirmation message after activating the new theme?

Thank you for answering my question. The Hever theme is the theme I changed to, but the layout is not the Hever theme when I try to customize. What I see is the layout that the website was created with. I did see the thank you message and when you look at the themes, the Hever theme is marked as my current theme. I know it is me, but I can’t figure out how to get the layout.

    Hello again,

Customizing the Hever theme’s front page, or for that fact any of the new Block Editor-centric themes, actually happens in the Page Editor and not in the Customizer.

Essentially, the message you receive after setting up the new theme, where you can click to choose to either learn more about the theme or to Customize it, could be confusing if your intention is to set up the new theme’s front page.

Thank you for pointing this out and I’m going to flag this thread for Staff as well as what appears in the Customizer should IMO reflect the new theme and not the old one. (I also tested this on my yet-another-new test site “sidewinder travels” and didn’t even get the new front page layout in Hever.)

  • The demo content should appear if the site is created new with the theme.

This is because changing themes should not be a destructive process, and if we did load the demo content when changing on an existing site, it would essentially be overwriting your existing front page.

You can find the theme’s documentation at https://wordpress.com/theme/hever

Staff I’ve tagged this for your input as to what the flow should be after activating one of the new Block Editor themes and encountering the issue where the previous theme’s front page shows in the Customizer but the new theme’s front page shows on the site itself. Thanks.

  • Yep, our replies crossed. :)

Sorry staff-blorbo I was typing while you were answering.

The demo content should appear if the site is created new with the theme.

Does that then mean that if one decides to switch themes, even prior to adding their own content, the user then needs to recreate from scratch the entire front page layout of the new theme? Thanks again.

  • In my tests, yes. There isn’t really a check for “does this have content?” so it needs to be selected during the new site flow (or manually built on an existing site following the theme’s documentation).

    Thanks for the clarification staff-blorbo.

    staff-blorbo,

The demo content should appear if the site is created new with the theme.

I’m not finding that to be true on most of the new sites I’ve created over the past few months. Today, for example, I created new test sites with the following themes applied at creation: Apostrophe 2, Pictorico, Sketch, Professional Business, and Twenty Nineteen. Of these only the one with the Pictorico theme activated at creation includes more than a hint of its demo’s content.

The “at creation” front pages of the sites with the Twenty Nineteen and Professional Business theme applied resemble not at all those of their demos, and each of the other two have just a hint of the corresponding demo’s content on their front pages.

  • Hm, interesting.

I’ll take a big swing at that list and see what I can narrow down, thanks!

Thanks staff-blorbo. Let me know if you’d like links to my test sites for those themes. I haven’t modified them at all.

Thank you @justjennifer, staff-blorbo and @musicdoc1. I thought I was losing my mind and you have helped me to realize it is not me. staff-blorbo, is this a new change? I do not remember theme changes behaving in this manner, but I could be remembering incorrectly. I will give the block editor a try to determine ease of use. I am not going to mark resolved just yet as I would like to see the outcome of your big swing at the list.

    Thank you again everyone.

Just a quick update. I went to the block editor and I see how I can re-create the theme, but I do not understand why I would need to do that. If I have chosen a theme and I have to re-create theme from scratch, what is the point of choosing a theme? We choose so we do not have to create from scratch. It defeats the purpose for me, but I would like to know if this is all the themes now or just some of them.

    Hello again,

I would like to know if this is all the themes now or just some of them

I have not tested this extensively, but it seems to be limited to the newer themes designed specifically for the new WordPress Block Editor. That includes Hever.

If I have chosen a theme and I have to re-create theme from scratch, what is the point of choosing a theme?

These newer Block Editor themes use a static front page as the front page of your site. That is what you would be recreating following the guide in the theme showcase page.

Also, if you create a brand new page in these new themes, you are presented with a number of possible layout options. This is really nice. :)

However, if you want the blog page to be your home page, after you select your theme, open the Customizer to Homepage Settings and change “Your homepage displays” to Your latest posts You can see the Hever blog page on the demo site at https://heverdemo.wordpress.com/news/ You can then continue to customize your theme in the Customizer with widgets, menus, etc.

    Hope that helps.

Hi @aprendiendoblw1 – rather than post into someone else’s support thread, Staff and volunteers can assist you better when you open your own thread at https://wordpress.com/help/contact Thanks.

    @mycynt
and Staff – it looks like I’m going to have to curb my enthusiasm.

It looks like the new page templates only show up when creating a new page in a Block Editor enabled site only if the site was originally created using one of the newer themes. If the site was switched from a previously non-block-editor theme, those page templates don’t appear. In any event, this is what I’m encountering on ablogdemo. Is this correct?

  • @justjennifer,

    You’re close :)

The page templates feature is currently still in testing, so it’s only available on some new sites, and not yet on sites that were created prior to this feature being launched. It will hopefully be available on all sites soon, though you’ll need to be using the block editor, and one of the new themes specifically created for the block editor, to use this feature. Keep a lookout for an announcement post on en.blog when this is fully launched.
