Cannot activate theme

  • @justjennifer, you should have the page template selector available now on your existing sites – our developers made the change yesterday.

And just a correction to what I said above – this isn’t just available on the new block editor themes, but on any theme that doesn’t have its own page templates.

If you run into any trouble with these templates, please let us know.

    Hi @kokkieh,

The page templates feature is currently still in testing, so it’s only available on some new sites, and not yet on sites that were created prior to this feature being launched.

I have just tested it with my old blog site. I applied a new theme Hover(designed for block editor specific theme). When I tried to create a page, it shows me different page templates as per new feature.

oh @kokkieh, I haven’t read your latest reply while I was posting here.

@kokkieh Thank you! Always glad to wake up to good news! All looks to be well on ablogdemo for newly created pages.

Will it be possible to access the page template selector without the page being a brand new page? (I guess that would also mean adding something like “add to page” or “overwrite page”.) Thanks again.

Just let me know if I’m “pushing it.” ;)

That’s not currently possible, no. The template selector only appears the first time you open the editor to create a brand new page.

Not at all. This one’s actually covered in our internal FAQ, so we knew it was going to come up :D

I appreciate eveyone’s input, but this still is not working like I want it to. I used an older theme just to see if it was the newer themes and it is not. (I used Goran, which I know is expiring soon and I also used Twenty Eleven) They also do not come up with the layout pictured in the theme. They need to be modified in the customizer, unless I am missing something.
I am positive the themes did not work like this in the past. It seems to be more complicated, but maybe it’s me. I really like WordPress. For a free site, there is a lot of options, but the changes seem to make this more difficult than I think it needs to be. Thank you everyone for your help.

They also do not come up with the layout pictured in the theme. They need to be modified in the customizer, unless I am missing something.

When you switch to a new theme it will never automatically show the layout of the theme according to the demo site. We only do that automatic setup for brand new sites when the first theme on the site is activated.

If you switch themes later on, we don’t automatically alter the layout in any way, as the tool that does the automatic layout is designed to work with default content we created for the theme, not with the content you’ve already added to your site by that point. Most people don’t want their site’s content replaced by our default content every time they change themes, which is why we don’t do it this way.

So when switching to a new theme you’ll always need to follow the theme’s instructions to manually configure the theme like the demo. We can also force the auto-setup to run from our end, provided you’re using a theme that supports it, but that’s typically only done if you’re also completely emptying a site to start fresh. Doing it without emptying the site can cause problems, due to the issue of our demo content replacing your existing content that I described above.

I am positive the themes did not work like this in the past.

In the past we didn’t auto-setup themes at all, even on brand new sites, so new sites were created completely blank, without even demo content. We introduced auto-setup for selected themes on new sites a couple years ago.
