Cannot add categories with a “mother” category

  • Unknown's avatar

At last, I can add categories, but I’ve still problems. I tried to create a “subcategory”, a category with a “mother” category. When I try to add, it seems to be added (I can see it listed in the page), but if I refresh the page and/or try to link an existing article with a subcategory, I realise that this subcategory has vanished!

I’ve opened this blog just a few days ago and I’m having tons of troubles!

Please help! My blog is http://tadlabs.wordpress.com

    Thank you in advance.

When linking a post to the new category, try just typing the name of your subcategory in the “Add” field. It should link it, and it won’t create a duplicate category (or it shouldn’t). I hope this makes sense.

If this is not useful information then I apologize in advance for posting it. Sometimes people get confused and think that categories and subcategories they create will display instantly. The fact is that they will not display until at least one post has been assigned to the category or sub-category in question and has been published.

Also note that this morning there was scheduled maintenance that did have a categories connection. http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/09/21/the-difference-between-tags-and-categories/

If you have followed all the correct steps and still have problems of a technical nature then reporting your situation to staff may be the way to go http://wordpress.com/contact-support/

Thank you for your answers. I’ll try to explain it better. I follow these steps:

Categories -> Add Category -> insert category name -> under “mother category” I select one of the preesistent category and then I click on “Add Category”

Now I can see the new category listed on top of the page.

But if I refresh the page or I click on the menu item “Category” the just inserted category vanishes!

I published a post through WLW and it appeared in question marks instead of Cyrillic letters, plus categories (that can be created through WLW also) were either in question marks or absent (in case of a subcategory) from my admin-manage categories area. I had to republish after changing the wrong text in the online editor and it worked. But adding a subcategory either didn’t yield any results (subcategory didn’t appear, but appeared in the category list in WLW after refreshing it) or resulted in the name of a category that had both the names of a parent and a child (I had to delete it of course). Since then my attempts to find this new subcategory have failed.

Some special letters and characters, that are foreign to the English language, are not supported by WordPress at the moment. That might be the reason in this case?

I believe, that WordPress is working on this issue. But if the difficulties persist, we will have to use words that do not have these letters or characters in them.

    to universalgeni:
What do you mean WP doesn’t support non-English characters? It’s been a problem when I started my Russian-language blog (samaralife.wordpress.com) but after several attempts at updating weblog setting within WLW it worked and I could publish Russian-language (Cyrillic-characters) posts from WLW without any problems. But since the advent of tags and WP2.3 I decided to update weblog settings in WLW and since then I cannot post Russian-language posts again. Again there are question marks. Now I am downloading WLW Beta 3 (have Beta 2 now) and will see if the problem resolves.
It is easy to say “we will have to use words that do not have these letters or characters in them” if you write in European languages where all characters are Latin, but what about Russian (and other languages)? Will we have to change bloghosting? By the way, others even have an overall Russian-language interface, while WP has only English. It is not a problem at all for me, but isn’t it the reason why so few Russians are choosing WP and prefer more user-friendly (to them) services? And now this character-issue on top.

Well, I’ve found this solution at: http://codex.wordpress.org/Windows_Live_Writer_Help#Non-ASCII_characters_render_incorrectly_on_UTF-8_encoded_blogs and hope that after changing to WLW Beta 3 the problem with question marks is gone.

    :-D)))) Haha.

I know this is frustrating but it must be some sort of a bug. This issue began on the 19.th of September and WordPress wrote in emails to several bloggers and here in Forum, that they are working on it.

I guess that not all of the Cyrillic letters are affected. Otherwise we would have had a posting storm in here. :-D))))

Cyrillic might not be affected at all. It was just a suggestion.

I posted OK on the 20th (19th in the USA). And then I didn’t post anything for a day. But today (22nd in Russia and early 21st in the USA) I posted and had question marks instead of ALL letters, except Latin.
There won’t be a storm of letters, because there are (in my perception and judging by what I see in the admin panel with new posts and hot blogs in my language) just a tiny group of Russian blogs in WP (free version at least). Besides, they might all use online editor that doesn’t have this problem. But as I posted above, WLW forum has the link to an explanation that WLW3 may help.

Installation of WLW Beta 3 helped and Cyrillic is posted as Cyrillic. BUT the categories issue remains. The updated post has the correct categories, but a new subcategory isn’t shown either in the admin category list (but shown in the admin posts list) or in the blog sidebar.

I have the same problems …. tday it was working but know i cant add any sub categories at all!

  • Unknown's avatar

I can’t say anything as I published only one post today and it was in the existing categories, so I cannot say if the problem with adding subcategories still exists. Today, though, the subcategory created yesterday (that wasn’t shown in the category list in WP) appeared where it should be.
